Every day our government works to create policies that have a direct
impact in our lives. Some of them include safety, health care, immigration,
taxation and many others. After a recent change of leadership in our
highest levels of government in the United States, it is expected that we
would see a large number of policy changes that could impact a large group
of people.
Our goal for this session is to discuss these changes using civil and
productive dialogue while gaining a better understanding of our own
views and those of others. The World Café structure has been known for
being a creative process for constructing collaborative conversations. For
SCC’s first World Café, we want discuss specific policies that pertain to the
current role of our government during this presidential term. The topics
we will discuss are the following:
Immigration: We will talk about Executive Order “Protecting the Nation
from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States,” also known as the
“Travel Ban.”
Environment: We will discuss the Executive Order “Promoting Energy
Independence and Economic Growth” that was introduced on March 28th.
Healthcare: Our focus will be on the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion
and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2017” recently passed by
both the House and the Senate.
Privacy: Focusing on Internet privacy, we will discuss the measure
S.J.Res. 34: A joint resolution providing for congressional disapproval under
chapter 8 of title 5, United States Code, of the rule submitted by the
Federal Communications Commission relating to “Protecting the Privacy
of Customers of Broadband and Other Telecommunications Services.”
Students, in small groups, will be able to choose two topics to discuss
during course of the session.
We hope to see you there!
