PHONICS & SATs KS1 The KS1 staff will be holding two key information meetings in April to help parents understand the testing that will be taking place after Easter with the pupils in Yr 1 and Yr2. Monday 3rd April 9.00 am – Phonics meeting for Yr1 parents Wednesday 5th April 9.00 am - SATs information meeting for Yr 2 parents SPORTS NEWS On 14th March the year 6 netball team played an away match against Charles Kingsley’s Primary school. Even though we showed great teamwork and pride, unfortunately we lost 8-3. Our team was made up of 3 Sophie’s, Angle, Ruby, Natasha and Oliver R. We all had great fun, Oliver, Sophie W and Angel scored our goals, we all agreed that Sophie W was player of the match. Written by Sophie B. TAG RUGBY On Thursday 26th March, Potley Hill competed in a Tag Rugby Tournament. The tournament was a huge success with over 40 teams competing and it was wonderful to see so many young people enjoying the sport. The first game we played was against St Bernadette's and which we won 5-0. The second game we drew 2-2 with Frogmore with some amazing runs by all. The third game was our toughest, against Crondall, which we drew 3-3. Our final game, against Elvetham Heath, was much anticipated by all after their superb performance in the recent Athletics Tournament. Our team went onto the pitch seeking revenge and we got it with a 6-3 win. The team looked great throughout the tournament and it was fantastic having the support of so many parents. There were some stand-out performances from Charlie and Oliver R, who on several occasions, out ran the other teams entirely and Emilia's tagging abilities really made things difficult for the opposition. Request from Miss Bucknell: If there are any grown-ups who would be interested in voluntarily coaching a tag rugby team or other sports team please contact the school office to arrange a chat. Please be aware that DBS checks are essential and coaching experience would be preferable. We have an incredibly talented cohort of children and grown-ups at Potley Hill and we are striving to provide as many opportunities to engage in sport as possible. END OF DAY ARRANGEMENTS FOR YR We know how eager you are to see you little lovelies at the end of the day, but please could we ask that parents stand further back from the YR doors so that teachers have a clear view of ALL parents in the vicinity in order to release the children safely. Currently, we have a bit of a bottleneck with parents crowded around the doors, which could also impede children’s progress if we were evacuating in an emergency. RECOMMENDED READS These are some of the other new reads from Waterstones Children’s Book Prize nominations. When Grandma says she’s seen a tiger in the garden, Nora doesn’t believe her. She’s too old to play Grandma’s silly games! Everyone knows that tigers live in jungles, not gardens. So even when Nora sees butterflies with wings as big as her arm, and plants that try and eat her toy giraffe, and a polar bear that likes fishing, she knows there’s absolutely, DEFINITELY no way there could be a tiger in the garden . . . Could there? Picture Book by Lizzy Stewart Set in Paris, with a dancing tiger as the star, this is an uplifting tale of following your dreams and pursuing your talent, no matter what, and about making friends. Max isn't like other tigers - he is a tiger with a dream! He longs to pirouette and plié, to leap and spin. He wants to be a dazzling dancer, shining on the stage! Little dancers will love to see Max triumph and get his moment in the spotlight. Picture Book by Fabi Santiago “My dad died twice. Once when he was thirty nine and again four years later when he was twelve.” On Al Chaudhury’s twelfth birthday his beloved Grandpa Byron gives him a letter from Al’s late father. In it Al receives a mission: travel back to 1984 in a secret time machine and save his father’s life. Younger Readers by Ross Welford Al soon discovers that time travel requires daring and imagination. It also requires lies, theft, setting his school on fire and ignoring philosophical advice from Grandpa Byron. All without losing his pet hamster, Alan Shearer… Pug is going on a seafaring adventure. He's had jam tarts for breakfast. He's wearing a smart sailor suit. There's just one problem. Pug is afraid of the water! Younger Readers by Laura James More Advanced Readers by Lindsay Eagar This powerful debut novel delicately blurs the line between truth and fiction as Carol unravels the fantastical stories of her mentally ill grandfather. When she and her family move to his deserted ranch in order to transfer him to a care home, Carol struggles to cope with the suffocating heat and the effects of her grandfather's dementia. Bees seem to be following her around, but the drought means this is impossible. She must be imagining things. Yet when her grandfather chooses her as the subject for his stories - tales of a magical healing tree, a lake, and the grandmother she never knew - Carol sees glimmers of something special in what her parents dismiss as Serge's madness. As she rethinks her roots and what she thought she knew about her family, Carol comes to the realization that Serge's past is quickly catching up with her present. A stunning coming-of-age story. ‘TOP HAT OF THE WEEK’ Child/ren Reason Caterpillar Daniel W Ladybird Owen D Dove Carla C Hummingbird Reece E Puffin Evie C Dolphin James W Whale Megan W Shark Ethan T-M Leopard Jack B Lion Dominic B Tiger Kezman C For using his Red thinking hat to talk about feelings after reading ‘The Child’s Garden’ For using his White thinking hat when writing instructions of how to plant a seed.
