Environmental Health Information Sheet – Keeping of Poultry Introduction The keeping of poultry within the City of Stirling is regulated by the City of Stirling Health Local Laws. What Are Poultry? Poultry includes: duck and any other domestic fowl. How Many Can I Keep? A maximum of 6 poultry (excluding pigeons) can be kept in residential zones (except where it has been developed for grouped housing) within the City of Stirling. A maximum of 30 pigeons can be kept in an urban zone unless the City gives permission otherwise. As a member of a bona fide pigeon club or association, where written evidence has been provided to the satisfaction of the City and permission given, a person may keep up to 75 pigeons. The keeping of geese, peacocks and roosters is prohibited in a residential zone. Where Can I Place My Pigeon Enclosure? Your poultry run must be at least 10m of a habitable room in a dwelling house, a public building or premises where people are employed or where food is stored, prepared, manufactured or sold. If your poultry run has a roof, this roof must be a minimum of 1m from any boundary fence. Are There Any Requirements For The Design Of My Poultry Run? If your intended poultry run is to have a fixed roof, you should notify the City’s Building Department before beginning construction. A person who knows poultry, or permits poultry to be kept must ensure that all poultry is kept in a properly constructed and securely fastened structure or enclosure provided with a floor consisting of concrete, brick paving or any other suitable impervious surface. How Must I Maintain My Poultry Run? You must maintain your poultry run in a clean condition at all times. Flies and odour could be problems you may experience with your poultry enclosure. For these reasons never allow poultry droppings to become wet as these provide excellent fly breeding conditions. It is also important to keep the area free from decomposing food scraps and poultry excreta. An outdoor pesticide, which does not harm poultry, may assist in controlling persistent fly problems. Can I Release My Poultry At Any Stage? Your pigeons must be contained at all times in a suitable cage, pen or enclosure unless the City’s permission is given otherwise. If you are a member of a pigeon club or association and the City’s permission has been granted to keep more than 30 pigeons, (as indicated above), you may release your pigeons for the purpose of exercise for periods of up to 2 hours duration. This may be done no more than twice per day. If you require further information please contact the City’s Health and Compliance Business Unit on 92055 8555.
