• Height loss can be a warning sign of a spine
fracture (a broken bone in your back).
• A spine fracture may be caused by osteoporosis,
a condition that causes bones to break easily.
• You may not be aware of a broken bone in your
back because 66% are painless.
• If you have a spine fracture, effective treatment
is available to reduce your risk of another broken
bone.
Spine fractures can result in:
• height loss
• a rounded back (spine)
• back pain
• more broken bones
• disability
Are you losing height?
Your height as a young adult: ___________________
Your height today: ___________________________
Amount of change: ____________________________
Keep this to record future height measurements by a
health care provider

Date:__________________ Height:_____________
Ask yourself:
1. Have I lost 2 cm (3/4”) or more in height as measured by my health
care provider, or 6 cm (2 1/2”) or more overall from when I was a
young adult?
2. Do I have a more rounded spine?
If you have answered yes to either of
these two questions, talk to your doctor
and insist on a spine x-ray (thoracic and
lumbar).
Over 50?
All men and women over 50 should have
their height measured annually to assess
for a possible spine fracture.
