Questions/Main Ideas Lesson 24 Deductive Reasoning
deductive reasoning uses facts, rules, definitions, or properties to reach logical conclusions
Questions/Main Ideas Example 1
Determine whether each conclusion is based on inductive or deductive reasoning.
a. In Miguel's town, the month of April has had the most rain for the past 5 years. He thinks that April will have the most rain this year.

Questions/Main Ideas valid logically correct
Law of Detachment
If p q is true and p is true, then q is also true.
(If the conditional is true and the hypothesis is true, then the conclusion is also true.)
[(p q)∧p]
q
example: Given: If a car is out of gas, then it will not start.
Sarah's car is out of gas.
Valid Conclusion: Sarah's car will not start.

Example 3
Determine whether the conclusion is valid based on the given information. If not, write invalid. Explain your reasoning using a Venn diagram.
Given: If a triangle is equilateral, then it is an acute triangle. The triangle is equilateral.
Conclusion: The triangle is acute.
Questions/Main Ideas Law of Syllogism
If p q and q r are true, then p r is also true.
[(p q)∧(q
r)]
(p
r)
*Similar to Transitive Property of Equality: If a = b and b = c, then a = c.
Example
Given: If you get a job, then you will earn money
.

C) If Jamal does not go to the movies, he does not go out with his friends.
D) There is no valid conclusion.
Questions/Main Ideas Draw a valid conclusion from the given statements, if possible. Then state whether your conclusion was drawn using the Law of Detachment or the Law of Syllogism. If no valid conclusion can be drawn, write no conclusion and explain your reasoning.
