From the Desk of the Principal
Dear Hughes Parents,
I would like to wish all of you a happy, safe and healthy New Year. A special
thank you is extended to all of our parents for their ongoing support of our
school. We all appreciate the support and collaboration.
Reading on a daily basis is very important. Reading a book, magazine or
newspaper can provide immeasurable results for children. It is important for
you to encourage your child to read. Likewise, engaging in a conversation
about the reading can be beneficial. Make family reading a regular part of each
day!
Our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) group continues to play an active role in
helping to educate children. The continued support of this organization is
greatly appreciated. I want to thank all PTA members for their support of our
educational program at Hughes.
As the school year continues, I look forward to working with all of you to create
a learning community that is safe and enriching.
Respectfully,
Allen E. Hyde

Stevens~Swan Humane Society
Again this year, the sixth grade students took on a "Pet Project" collecting donations for the
Stevens-Swan Humane Society. Many needed items, from dog and cat food to cleaning supplies,
were brought in to help out our four legged friends in need. On December 18, Cody (along with
his human friend) paid a visit to Hughes to collect all of the donations and talk with the
students about the work of the Humane Society. They were very appreciative of the support!

Student Of The Month
Congratulations to the physical education students of the month at Hughes Elementary. These students have worked
very hard to achieve this accomplishment. To receive this award, students must try their best in PE class, follow directions, always
come to class prepared with athletic sneakers, demonstrate good sportsmanship, and follow safety procedures. Students must also
perform the fitness stations with good form. These activities include biceps curls, squats, triceps extensions, various stretching,
agility, and core exercises. We are very proud of our hard working students at Hughes!

Winter Reading
BY KRISTIN DARDANO LMS
To read digitally, or not to read digitally-- that is the question. The answer… it doesn’t matter as long as you’re reading! While
I enjoy assisting our students in selecting a paper copy of a book to read from the library, I know that many of them prefer to
read on tablets. I am happy to announce that we now have the capacity to lend books digitally through “OH!” It is a BOCES
sponsored e-library! The product is very user friendly and is similar to borrowing e-books and audio books from the Mid York
Library. While our Junior and Senior Highs have had this capability for awhile, elementary school content is newer to the
system.

December 2013
Dear Parents,
As part of a required school health examination, a student is weighed and his/her height is measured. These numbers are
used to figure out the student’s body mass index or ‘BMI’. The BMI helps the doctor or nurse know if the student’s weight is in
a healthy range or is too high or too low. Recent changes to the New York State Education Law require that BMI and weight
status group be included as part of the student’s school health examination. A sample of school districts, including New
Hartford, has been selected to take part in a survey by the New York Sate Department of Health. We will be reporting to New
York State Department of Health information about our students’ weight status groups. Only summary information is sent. No
names and no information about individual students are sent. However, you may choose to have your child’s information
excluded from this survey report.
The information sent to the New York State Department of Health will help health officials develop programs that make it easier
for children to be healthier.
If you do not wish to have your child’s weight status group information included as part of the Health Department’s survey this
year, please send a note to your school nurse, by December 20, 2013 and call the Health Office to inform them.
Thank you.

Happy New Year!
Kindergarten Registration
Please remember to bring the required information to Kindergarten
registration which is being held on Tuesday January 21st and Wednesday,
January 22nd. The Health Office needs your child’s immunization records
as well as your most recent physical exam from his or her doctor, along
with their original birth certificate and proof of residency.
Keep your Germs To Yourself!
We will all feel better. Coughing and sneezing spreads flu germs
to everyone around you. Cover up to stop the flu virus. “Respiratory etiquette” made simple:
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
• If you Don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into the bend of your elbow, not your hands!
• Put all used tissues in a wastebasket.
• Stay home if you think you have the flu.
• Remember that hand-washing remains our number one defense against germs.
Tdap Immunization
All students who will be entering 6th grade and are 11 years of age for the 2014--2015 school year are required to
have a Tdap in order to enter school in September. Please contact your physician early to schedule an appointment.
This is a New York State Department of Health requirement.
6th Grade Physicals
6th graders entertaining the thought of playing any sport in the 7th grade should pick up a Sports Physical form in
the Health Office. This Sports Physical form should be brought to your next scheduled doctor’s visit. This sports
physical will count for the mandated 7th grade physical, as well as for sports.
Cold Weather Clothing
Please have your child dress warmly and appropriately for the weather. Occasionally, our children require a change
of clothing unexpectedly. It is always a good idea to have a change of clothes stored at school, especially socks and
underwear.
Attention Parents:
Are there any Registered ProfessionalNurses out there that would enjoy
substituting in the nurse’s office? Perhaps you have a friend or relative that is an RN and may be
interested. Please give me a call at 738-9357.
