SMSC Global issues Trade They will learn about the global location of the main rainforests and the reason for the climatic conditions found within them, Kayapo tribe and how their habitat is under threat, animal adaptations to survive the extreme environment and the human causes of rainforest destruction. Finally the unit ends by looking at ways rainforests can be conserved and protected. Focus – introduce students to the concept of development and how countries are categorised in terms of development. They will learn what development is and how people’s lives differ depending on the level of development, focus on the Kibera slum in Kenya and how international aid has helped development in this area. The Brandt line is introduced so that students understand how development is categorised, students then will understand issues with the Brandt line today and make an assessment on whether it is still applicable. Students are introduced to Hans Rosling, a current world leading statistician of demography. Focus – as part of Fairtrade fortnight we are introducing the concept of trade, Fairtrade and trafficking. Students start off by playing the trade game and reflect on how trade can be unfair, we then introduce the concept of Fairtrade and human trafficking. Students will start off by looking at the advantages and disadvantages of renewable and non-renewable energy. We will then look at how towns and buildings can be made sustainable. Fieldwork opportunity – looking at how sustainable the school building is Focus - students to explore the emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. We start off by looking at the location of all 5 countries. We look at industry in Brazil, energy and oil in Russia, working condition in India, living condition in China and mining in South Africa.
