We are off and running this year planning exciting events and fundraisers for the 2014-2015 school year. We would like to thank all parents/guardians and volunteers for your support of our school. We couldn’t do it without you! The upcoming Jogathon is set for October 14th - Mark your calendars because you don’t want to miss this event. This year, we are planning something a little different (and a lot exciting)!! The evening of Jogathon, come back to school for an award presentation, dinner from some of the area’s food trucks, and fun activities for the kids! Watch for more information coming soon! If we meet the fundraising goal, the Jogathon will be our only child directed fundraiser this year! More money raised means more student enrichment opportunities for our children. We thank you in advance for your support! Art and Music Residencies can help to fill some of the gap when these programs are not available. Last year, Gilham was lucky enough to have Alex Lanham, an Artist in Residence from Lane Arts Council, spend four weeks at Gilham working with students to create portraits on tiles. This Residency was funded in part by the Eugene Education Foundation (EEF) and Gilham PTO (your fundraising dollars at work!). Each student should have brought one completed tile home, and another finished tile left at school to be displayed. Check out the hallway that leads to the library and you will see many of these tiles on display. In the near future, more tiles will be displayed down the main hallway as well. What a wonderful way to beautify our school. A HUGE thank you to parent volunteer, Eric Garges of Gemstone Builders, for giving of his time to get these tiles on display for students, staff and visitors to enjoy for many years to come. This year we are getting ready to offer students an amazing musical experience. Starting October 20th, and lasting for 4 weeks, Gilham will be hosting Kelly Thibodeaux, a Musical Resident from Lane Arts Council. Kelly will spend time with each class teaching students how to play the fiddle. During the students’ last session with Kelly, parents will be invited to the music room to watch and listen to their student play the fiddle. Watch for more information from your child’s teacher in regards to this performance. Check out the websites below to see Kelly’s Fiddle Program or watch a video of him at work. This Residency, in part, is funded by a grant through the Target Corporation. http://lanearts.org/artists/kelly-thibodeaux/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z50YTS51lGs JAGUAR JIVE 5 PAGE Boxtops and Labels for Education The first Boxtop and Labels for Education Contest ended on Thursday, September 18th. The Book Fair will be open during conferences. Flyers will be sent home with more information on hours, games, contests and prizes. The theme is " Sir Readalot's Castle". A note from Gilham’s Food Service Coordinator I am really enjoying being here at Gilham and look forward to seeing more kids for lunch and breakfast. Students will only be able to charge 2 lunches and the 3rd one would be an emergency meal (cheese sandwich with offering bar). Notices have been sent home for past charges. If there are any questions, please call me and I will gladly go over the charges with you. Thanks!!!! Teresa Harvey JAGUAR JIVE 8 PAGE JAGUAR JIVE 9 PAGE 10 EUGENE SCHOOL DISTRICT 4J LOCAL OPTION LEVY – NOVEMBER 2014 LONG EMAIL / NEWSLETTER ARTICLE Local Option Levy Renewal on November Ballot Measure 20-222 would continue local school funding without changing tax rate This fall, voters in our school district will be asked whether to renew local funding for schools at the same tax rate. Measure 20-222 on the November 4 election ballot would renew the local option levy for 4J school operations, such as teachers, programs and school days. The levy provides about $8 million per year, equivalent to about 16 school days or 80 teaching positions. The local option levy is not a new tax or a tax increase. Renewing it would continue the current property tax rate for the 4J local option levy. The levy has been providing local funding for schools since 2000 and must be renewed by voters every 5 years. Most funding for Oregon schools is determined by the state. A local option levy is the one way voters in a school district can choose to provide additional funding for the day-to-day operations of their local schools. Without this levy, the school district would have about $8 million less per year to pay for school operations. To vote on Measure 20-222, you must live in the Eugene School District and be registered to vote by October 14. Ballots will be mailed to voters beginning October 17 and must be returned by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4. To learn more, go to www.4j.lane.edu/levy. JAGUAR JIVE PAGE 11 Policy, Procedures, and Reminders HOURS OF SUPERVISION It is important for you to be aware of the hours when no supervision is provided in the building or on the grounds at Gilham Elementary School. The school provides supervision only between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and during official school events and programs that occur before and after regular school hours. THREE SCHOOL RULES Gilham is a PBS (Positive Behavior System) school. The students practice being SAFE, RESPECTFUL, AND RESPONSIBLE in all areas of the school — hallways, arrival and departure areas, cafeteria, bathrooms, assemblies, computer lab, library, and the classrooms. Ask your child about the three rules. Those who practice the rules receive Paws-i-tives!!! Please label your student’s coats and hoodies. These CELL PHONES LATE ARRIVALS, EARLY Parents, please turn off cell phones when you enter the building. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter. DEPARTURES WHEELS As a safety consideration, Gilham has adopted a “WHEELS” policy that is common throughout most of 4J. All students and parents are asked to walk or carry their “wheels” (bicycle, roller blades, scooters, skateboards, roller shoes) while on school property. BUS LANE REMINDER Bus lanes are for buses only and are posted with “Do Not Enter” signs. This will be enforced at all times! Anyone entering is at risk of being cited by the police. It is for the safety of our students. Parents please remember to come to the office to sign in and notify office personnel when your student arrives after the 7:55 a.m. start time. This allows us to change the student’s absence to a tardy. When picking up your student early, it helps to eliminate confusion and congestion if parents wait outside the front entry or inside the foyer by the office not outside the classroom. JIVE common lost items, and we’ll be able to find their owner if labeled. PINK NOTE FOR LATE ARRIVALS Students who arrive late in the morning will need to check into the office. Those students will be sent to class with a pink note indicating they already checked in. If a student comes late to class without a pink note, they will be sent to the office to get one. AS WE TRY TO SAVE EXPENSES, NOTICES SENT HOME WILL PRIMARILY BE BY PHONE AND EMAIL. PLEASE BE SURE TO KEEP US INFORMED OF YOUR UPDATED PHONE NUMBERS AND EMAIL ADDRESSES. JAGUAR are very Calendar of Events For a complete list of upcoming Gilham Elementary School important dates and events, visit the school web site at: http://schools.4j.lane.edu/gilham PAGE 12 Policy, Procedures, and Reminders, Cont. GILHAM ATTENDANCE POLICY 2014-2015 Gilham Elementary School starts promptly at 7:55 a.m. each school day. Students are expected to be in class by 7:45 a.m. preparing to begin each day. Absences and late arrivals are upsetting for students. Both disrupt their schedules, require readjustments to the class routine, and slow down learning. Procedures Teacher sends daily attendance to the office noting any late arrivals or absences. Step 1: If a student is absent 2 consecutive days and/or late 4 days, or when the student is exhibiting a pattern of poor attendance, the teacher contacts home stressing the importance of good attendance. Examples: e-mail, note home, phone, pink “oops” slip is signed, dated and sent home, etc. Step 2: School attendance report is run the last Friday of each JAGUAR JIVE month. All students within a 20-day period with a minimum of 8 late arrivals and/or 4 absences will receive: A phone call from the office regarding student’s attendance problem(s) and the person making the call will work with parents to help problem-solve solutions. Examples: alarm clock, car pools, reward system, etc., OR Letter #1 is sent to the parents of those students first identified with attendance problems that have shown little, if any, improvement, OR Letter #2 is sent to the parents indicating a truancy report will be filed with Lane ESD if the attendance problem continues, OR Truancy report is filed with Lane ESD. Oregon State Law (ORS339.010339.990) defines truancy as a student who has received 8 or more half days of unexcused absences in any 20-day period. PARKING PROCEDURES Please exercise caution in the Gilham parking lot during the busy morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times. Remember there is NO PARKING in front of the yellow curb in the parking area. These are fire lanes and need to be kept open. You may use this area to quickly drop off and pull away; however, if your students are not out front waiting, we encourage you to park and walk to pick them up. Waiting for your student at the curb can cause a major back up of cars. Other drivers get frustrated and often pull around cars that are sitting for too long, creating a dangerous situation for children. Our objective is to keep our students safe and make it as easy as possible for those who are dropping off and picking up. PAG E 1 3 Dismissal and Parking 2 1 3 5 4 1. Car Pick-up 2. What about 15 or 20 days? If your student misses 15 days each year, will they graduate from high school? The answer is, probably not. 4J recommends fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. Your child begins to learn the importance of school in kindergarten, and attendance is one of the critical factors in determining their academic success. Children get sick, and when they are sick, they aren’t learning much. When your student is running a fever, can’t keep their mucous contained, or are vomiting, we don’t want them in school exposing the rest of the children. However, a few sniffles, occasional cough, or other minor ailment is not a good excuse to miss school. If your child isn’t feeling well in the morning and suddenly is feeling better, bring them to school. School district recommendations are fever free for 24 hours prior to returning to school. If a child has a temperature over 100 degrees in the afternoon, they should not attend school the following day. The same applies to vomiting, etc. When a child is home sick, they need rest. I recommend no video games or TV. Quiet activities in bed or on the couch are best. If they have stayed home sick, they should not attend sporting activities or play with friends after school. If you have questions or would like to talk about your child’s health, feel free to call me, Laurie Rowe, RN 541-790-6200 Athletic Shoes at School Please With warmer weather we really encourage athletic shoes at school so our children will run and play outside. When students wear flip flops, sandals and crocs there is less running and playing on the playground or if they do run and play we get stubbed toes, splinters and twisted ankles. For these reasons please monitor your children’s choice in shoes. If you could use some athletic shoes please contact Laurie Rowe, School Nurse and she will assist 541-790-6200. 4J Tracking Harassment and Discrimination School is to inform parents if their student receives a threat! JAGUAR JIVE It has always been our practice to keep parents informed if their son or daughter receives a serious threat of violence or harm at school, but it is important for you to know about a set of procedures we implement to comply with state law. Oregon law requires schools to inform parents if their son or daughter’s name appears on a targeted list; i.e., a “hit list,” that threatens violence or harm, or when he or she receives a threat of violence or harm from another student. We will be using the following procedure to inform you if your student either receives or makes a serious threat of violence or harm. If your son or daughter’s name appears on a list threatening violence or harm, or if he or she receives other threats of violence or harm by another student, we will attempt to meet with you personally, or talk by telephone, within 12 hours of learning about the threat. We will tell you about the threat, who made the threat (if we know), and the action we are taking to respond to it. We will also send you a notice within 24 hours, stating that your child did receive a threat. Our number one priority will be to make sure that school is safe for your children. If your son or daughter made the threat, we will let you know that he or she made the threat and the action we are taking, including informing the parents of the student who received the threat that your student made. We are also following a similar process for informing staff when they receive a threat from a student, and are required by the district’s Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook to inform the police. Please call Gina Wilde, Gilham principal, at 790-6200 if you have any questions regarding this process.
