What Is Lakeland?
A regional structure for public library service in Michigan was mandated by P.A. 89 of 1977.
Since then, forty-two member libraries at 78 building locations made up of all size libraries have
joined together as the Lakeland Library Cooperative to provide improved service to 1,286,990
residents of west Michigan.
This Cooperative approach preserves local initiative and control while taking full advantage of
the efficiencies that a larger service area makes possible.
The Cooperative does not provide direct service to the public. Instead it provides shared public
access catalog, delivery service, continuing education, advocacy, and vendor discounts to
member libraries.
The Lakeland Library Cooperative currently has participating members in eight counties across
west Michigan. The counties are Allegan, Barry, Ionia, Kent, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo
and Ottawa counties with some minor participation from Gratiot, Mecosta and Oceana counties.
Through its association with other regional cooperatives and organizations, Lakeland provides
access to library resources throughout the state.
