News www.knoxcountyartleague.org September 2009 vol. XIII, issue IX 740.397.5257 President’s Message “Art In Action” Thanks You The Knox County Art League recently hosted our first annual Art In Action event at the B&O Depot in Mount Vernon. New Members Pruitt Shutt Patti Albaugh Ellen Shiffler Jamie Henry Emily Weaver Lindsay Hagen Benson Thanks to all renewed members and sponsors for their continued support. The event featured artists in action, demonstrating and creating works of art in the open air, as well as an eclectic mix of musicians performing throughout the days and evenings. As always, I was overwhelmed by the talent of each artist and by the spirit of fellowship and cooperation that naturally occurs among our membership. Despite the August heat and the struggles that always arise with any new event, our artists, guests, and volunteers managed to have an excellent time that benefited the arts, artists, and the community. Thanks to our demonstrating artists: Josh Shremshock, Pam and Gene Gray, Brian Baby, Jim Jennings, Thom Pagniano, Robin Nordmoe, Ken and Linda Shaffer, Deb Yorde, Ann Jordan, Diane Williams, Willa Fink, Stephanie McKee, and anyone else whom I might have missed. We also thank our sponsors who supported thie event: Ariel, Cory Samuell, Chip Zolman, Wayne Bower, The Pirate’s Cove, Com Comp, the Shremshocks, International Paper, Genre’s Lock Service, Misty Meadows Preserve, the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County, and the North Main Gallery. We also recognize and thank the guests who set up information tables featuring the many services and programs available to people in Knox County: Hope Now, The DELTA Project, American Red Cross, Orange Barrel Productions, MTVArts, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, and New Directions Domestic Violence Shelter. And a warm thank-you to the musicians and performing artists who entertained us: the YMCA Rocket Cheerleaders, Diane Dingler and her students, Sarah Goselee Reed, Jeff Bell, Kate Westfall, Spence Hoeflich and Round Table Project, Ken Shaffer and Robin Nordmoe, Dede Defresne, Yazoo Street Scandal, Stereotypical, Ryan Ruland, and Josh Thomas and friends. Gamblin Etching Inks have a following among discerning printmakers because of their high pigment load, excellent working properties, and incredible sensitivity to the printmaker’s marks. All of Gamblin’s Etching Inks are handcrafted in small batches at Gamblin’s Portland, Oregon factory. Book Review Wate rco l o r fo r t h e Fi r s t Ti m e (Paperback) by Kory Fluckiger It doesn’t take years of art lessons to create beautiful watercolors: this fabulous entry in the For the First Time series can guide beginners to success. Featuring a wonderfully lucid question-and-answer format, it addresses all of the basics and some advanced techniques too. Generously-sized photographs and illustrations clearly showcase every exciting procedure—including how to use basic and controlled washes; add detail to an image; and work in black and white. Best of all, as novices master the different skills, they’re also producing finished pieces that will leave them feeling proud and motivated to do more: lovely seashells, vivid autumn leaves, a single lily. And because watercolors aren’t just for framed art, there are also projects for stationery, cards, journal entries, and bookmarks. Thanks, Tonia Beyond the Basics Advanced Techniques that Make your Watercolors Sing ! ______________________________________________________________________ We’ve all looked at an accomplished watercolor artist’s work and wondered aloud what his or her secret is that allows them to produce such wonderful paintings. To be sure, practice, practice, practice is one of the ingredients. But, there are some techniques that the best artists have learned and consistently use in their work that sets them apart from the average painter. The good news is that these techniques are not difficult to learn or to do. In fact they are quite simple, and by gaining an understanding of how and when to use them, you can make a definitive improvement in the quality of your own work. In this workshop we’ll explore new ways to use color as a design tool, we’ll explore the use of hard and soft, and lost and found edges, negative painting techniques, and other” tricks of the trade” The workshop will include lecture, demonstrations, individual painting time and a group critique of the afternoon’s work at the end of the day. Participants should bring several photographs that they would like to paint from. The instructor will also have photos available. Schedule for the Day 9:00 –10:00 Discussion and exercises Color Mixing-Clean color and making (and fixing) mud Problem children…greens and greys Color in Design Mixing on the paper….the best color is “found” color . 10:00 -12:00 Individual Painting Time 12:00 -1:00 Lunch Break 1:00 -1:30 Edges Hard/soft/lost/found -how to make them -how to use them to improve your painting 1:30 –2:00 Negative Shapes Using negative shapes to unify the painting 2:00-3:45 Individual Painting Time 3:45-4:30 Group Critique of the Days Work _________________________________________________________________________ Instructor: Charles Rowland Time: 9:00am – 4:30pm Class size: 6 Min/20 Max Charles Rowland Telephone: (740) 548 4976 Email: [email protected] Creating Dynamic Paintings – A Design Approach ______________________________________________________________________ Even the simplest subject can result in one of those breathtaking paintings that we just never get tired of looking at, and thinking…WOW! I want to paint something like that. Well, you can! The painters’ challenge is to entertain his/her viewer, much like a successful singer, musician or author does. We have to capture the viewer’s attention and keep his/her interest for as long as possible. …if we can do that, that’s where the WOW! comes in. The secret to doing that is not so much how we put paint on paper (technique) but where we put paint on paper, i.e. how we select and place the elements that go on the paper. That’s what a design approach helps us do. In this workshop we’ll learn how to use color, value, shape and other design elements to create a painting that not only grabs our viewers attention, but also leads his eye to continue exploring and enjoying our painting. The workshop will include lecture, demonstrations, individual painting time and a group critique of the afternoon’s work at the end of the day. Participants should bring several photographs that they would like to paint from. The instructor will also have photos available.
