An Inspector Calls Writing activities Eva Smith’s diary Inspector Goole: “I’ve been round to the room she had, and she’d left a letter there and a sort of diary.” Imagine you are Eva Smith. Choose one of the following events and write a diary entry about it: -‐ being fired by Arthur Birling after leading a strike for higher wages; -‐ getting hired by Milwards and then sacked for offending Sheila Birling; -‐ meeting Gerald Croft and the relationship that followed; -‐ meeting Eric Birling, your first night with him and the pregnancy that followed; -‐ going to the Brumley Women’s Charity Organisation and being refused help by Mrs Birling. Be sure to read the relevant passages and include the important details. The family’s diary Write a diary entry written the day of one of the following events: -‐ Mr Birling: the strike at your factory and your sacking of Eva Smith. -‐ Sheila Birling: your encounter with Eva Smith at Milwards. -‐ Gerald Croft: the day before you had to end your relationship with Daisy Renton (Eva Smith). -‐ Mrs Birling: the committee meeting in which you refused to help Eva Smith. -‐ Eric Birling: the day Eva Smith told you she was pregnant. Remember that you are writing on the day the event took place, not the day you learnt of Eva’s suicide. Inspector Goole’s police report Imagine you are Inspector Goole and that you are a real police inspector.
