Some of us get to church less often during the summer. Some
visit friends and family we miss during the wintery months,
and completely lose touch with others who are off visiting
their family and friends. This Sunday we regather. I will muse
about these seasonal migrations.

September 14 “Liberalism” Rev. Brian J. Kiely
This once treasured word is now often a damaging club
wielded by the religiously and politically conservative. But
liberalism is a core value in our religion. The thing is, we
may have lost sight of its meaning.

International Day of Peace is observed annually on
September 21. It is dedicated to world peace, and specifically
the absence of war and violence.

Have you been thinking about inviting a friend to church? This would be a good
Sunday. The service will take a basic, beginner’s look at our tradition, explaining some
of the core values and approaches.

Ministerial Musings
What would it be like for the
whole congregation to examine
our lives and activities in terms of a
single theme for a whole month?
At the Canadian minister’s
meetings in May, we all took part
in a day long workshop looking at
this kind of a program. I had heard
about ‘theme-based church’ as it’s
called and was a bit skeptical, but I
came away from the session
excited and willing to give it try.
What is Theme-Based Church?
In it’s simplest form, Theme-Based Church focuses on exploring spacious ideas for
a month at a time, often in a mix of ways that involve as much as church life as
possible. A couple of examples: What would it be like to be a people of Grace? of
Wonder? of Resilience? of Revelry? You can see they are very broad. They are
ways of approaching our typical Sunday topics…lenses through which we can
look.
First, the themes that shape Sunday services. Each service is expected to touch
on the theme in some way. Even the church musical team, guest speakers and
musicians are asked to consider and at least reference the theme it in their work.
It’s easier than it might seem.
At UCE there has been great response to the Chorealis annual theme of services
and to the various month long series on world religions and more recently social
justice. It allowed us all to go a bit deeper into a topic. The Children and Youth Programs can also get involved with this, as can adult
programs and even special lectures and workshops when appropriate. Over time
it can become an all church approach.
Since I only took this training in late May, it would have been a challenge and
probably a bad idea to try to make a complete switch for this Fall. Instead the

Board, the Worship Committee, the Chorealis leadership and our Director of
Religious Education have all agreed to give this Modest Proposal a try:
!
•
•
Set aside three theme months: November, January and April
Advertise the theme idea in advance in the Fall and use a September
Sunday to describe the approach. • Pick some themes others have used or on our own.
• Involve Chorealis and RE.
• Ask UCE Discusses to use the theme.
• Make it part of the Religion on Tap discussions
• Hold an evaluation session in person at the end and see where people want
to go. If you have any comments we would all welcome them.
!
Hope you have had a pleasant summer.
See you in church,
Brian

President’s Report
Having just taken on the responsibility of UCE President, I look
forward to working with everyone on the Church Board and in
the congregation to maintain the wonderful principles inherent
already in our church and maybe to create new initiatives,
either in faith or fellowship, in our church community.
My childhood and teens were spent in the Unitarian Church in
Calgary, only a “few” years ago, and I rejoined the church after
moving to Edmonton 6 years ago. The UCE community is a
positive aspect of my life through singing in the choir, learning
about social justice issues and making great friends. I hope my role will be
positive in our community. With our Unitarian principles we can work together to
keep our community as vital and relevant as it already is!

Treasurer’s Report
Our next casino is scheduled for Dec. 3 and 4, a Wednesday and Thursday, so
please mark your calendars. We need lots of volunteers, but the jobs are easy and

there’s always a professional casino person there to make
sure nothing goes wrong. We’re skedded for the Baccarat
Casino this time, and happily, we’re not stuck doing one of
the longer shifts that the AGLC has permitted in some
casinos. Blaise Szekely will again be our helmsman (casino
director and general manager) and I will assist with the
recruiting. We’ll start official recruitment later this month,
but please contact me if you’d like to help.
Children’s Program Report
We had a wonderful year last year, thanks to our many volunteers and the
support we receive from the congregation. A special thanks to
former Co-Director of Religious Education Kate Redfern who
will be missed, we wish you all the best in your future
endeavours. Lauren Stanley will be returning as Director of
Religious Education. We are excited to welcome back
Michelle Van der Molen, who will be engaging the
Pathfinders with “Toolbox of Faith”. The Compass Kids and
Chalice Children will be learning from curriculum based on
“Love Surrounds Us” and “Moral Tales”.

Joyfulness will be a key theme of the Western Regional Fall Gathering,
being hosted by UCE the weekend of Oct. 31 to Nov. 2.
Keynote speaker Rev. Amanda Aikman is not just minister to the South
Fraser Unitarian Congregation in Surrey, B.C., but also a Joyfulness
Consultant, helping individuals and groups add joy to their everyday
lives. The weekend is titled Communities of the Heart and will offer four
streams to choose from. Besides the keynote and workshop on joy, there will be a
music stream – attention, choir members! There will be a stream on the changing
nature of church communities, led by Liz James of the Saskatoon congregation.
Finally, there will be a stream on the changing nature of spiritual care, led by
hospital chaplains Helen McFadyen and Anne Nelson. As always, there will be a separate program for youth – there is talk of having the
youth make the Saturday evening meal under the guidance of master chef Rev.
Brian Kiely. Check our Facebook page, Western Regional Fall Gathering, for updates. Plan to
attend this terrific weekend – registration details to follow soon. And think about
volunteering – we will be hosting Unitarians from across the prairies plus
Thunder Bay, so we need help pulling this off! Watch for signup sheets in the
church foyer.

Make Time For Music This Year
Enrich your life with community and song – join Chorealis. We practice at UCE
from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. each Thursday and sing at one Sunday service each month
between September and May. We have a great season lined up, featuring a wide
variety of musical styles and themes. Music lovers of all ages and ability are
welcome.
Our first practice is on Thursday, Sept. 4.
Questions? Please contact either of our co-conductors, Karen Mills

Teller Team Recruiting
Should you have a Sunday once a month when you'd be able to spare a little
time after the service, our Teller Team would love to add you to our list of
available Fill-Ins for when a regular member is to be away.
Or... if a regular once a month commitment appeals we'd love to have you too.
Orientation always provided should it be needed. Just speak to Edwina any
Sunday so she can 'pencil' you in. A phone call or email note to her would work
too.

A Night of Intrigue
We are planning a fun fund raiser Murder Mystery dinner on September 27
at 5 PM, at the Church. The Murder Mystery to be solved is called
Forever Friends.
Everyone will be asked to bring food to share, plus a wine or
beverage of your choice. These are a lot of fun. There is a
charge of $25 per person. All money collected goes to the
Church.
Anyone wanting to be included must let us know in advance,
and be committed to being there and on time, as we cannot start
until everyone is there.Once we have the list completed (about 40
people will be taking part in solving the mystery - more can attend
but may not have a character assigned) we will let you know what

One Person’s Trinket, Is Another Person’s Treasure.
Our church is holding a pre-Christmas gift sale December 6/7 and 13/14.
Many of us are finding out that things we scrimped and saved for, used and
treasured are no longer needed. If that is the case for you, UCE will be pleased to
accept your items for our sale.
The sale will be held in the library, and will be different from the garage sale—the
focus is limited to gift giving and entertaining. Tea does taste better served from a
pot, cake is most scrumptious when displayed on a cake plate, and this will be
the sale to find such key serving pieces and many others.
We will be pleased to accept giftware items for men and women—small
ornamentals, vintage collectibles, bling and fashion jewelry, crystal,
