Service Learning/Lab Assignment
Welcome to our Freerice.com Project! The goal of this project is to help you improve your
vocabulary skills while helping those suffering from the problems of hunger. You will develop
an understanding of how YOU, as an individual, can make a difference in the world.
Complete the following activities - due dates will be assigned in class:
1. Sign-up for Service Learning - do one of the following:
•
Go to Room 1159 (Center for Community Involvement)
•
Register yourself online at https://sisvsr.mdc.edu/cci/stuapp.aspx
o
Choose #1 – “Course service assigned by your professor (service-learning).”
o
Login using your student ID and password
o
Click on the “Start a New Service Application” button
o
Choose our course and then select the Agency FREE RICE
o
Print out application and sign it.
2. Select the correct answers to 50 vocabulary words per week on www.freerice.com (6 hours)
3. E-mail 5 people you know informing them of the freerice.com website. (1/2 hour) include:
•
The name of the site and the 2 goals of Freerice (go to freerice.com and click on “About”)
•
YOU MUST Copy (Cc:) your professor ([email protected]) on all 5 e-mails
4. Send a letter to the US president supporting our participation in a joint effort with other countries to
help end world hunger. (1/2 hour)
•
Go to www.freerice.com, go to FAQ, scroll to “What else can I do to end world hunger?”
•
Read #3 and then click on the last word - “here.” Read what you can do and click NEXT
•
Click on US flag, read letter, click print
•
Sign and bring to class
•
Option: Write your own letter, sign and bring to class
5. Bring 1 of the following items to class to donate. (1/2 hour)
•
canned meats like tuna, salmon, chicken, turkey & ham
•
canned chunky soups and stews
•
canned beans, fruits and vegetables
•
new unopened plastic containers of peanut butter or jelly
6. Watch Video of free rice being distributed: (1/2 hour)
•

Go to http://www.freerice.com
3.
Do NOT download the Free Rice Toolbar. When the option comes up, hit NO.
4.
Click on OPTIONS located at the top right hand side of the page.
•
CLICK ON: Remember my Total Rice Donation from the last time I played when I start
FreeRice.
5.
After you have made the choice above, remember to press the SET OPTIONS button
6.
Click back on HOME to play.
7.
Make sure under SUBJECTS, ENGLISH VOCABULARY is chosen. You will not get credit for the other
subjects.
8.
Answer first vocabulary question.
9.
Click on CHANGE LEVEL located at bottom of left green box.
10.
Set level to correspond to the weekly assignment below.
You are responsible for contributing 500 grains of rice each week to the World Food Program. In order to do
this, you must guess 50 words correctly on FreeRice. The following assignments are to be completed as
scheduled:
• Tuesday, September 7th:

• Tuesday, September 21st:
Begin at Level 7 - 500 grains

Make sure that you print and turn in to me each Tuesday the page that shows your 500 grains total for the
week. In order for FreeRice to keep track of your stored totals, you must use the same computer to play. If that
is not possible, just remember to print the page that shows the 500 grain total for the week. YOU WILL HAVE
CONTRIBUTED AT LEAST 6,000 GRAINS OF RICE BY THE END OF THE END OF THE SEMESTER!
