GARY DICKER GETTING
CLOSER TO PROMOTION
It has been a fine season so far for Gary Dicker, a
member of the Brighton team that has led League
One from early in the campaign and could clinch
promotion to the Championship with games to
spare. And that would be a second promotion for
Gary, who with another former player, Stephen
Gleeson (MK Dons), helped Stockport County to
beat Rochdale 3-2 in the League Two Play-off at
Wembley in May 2008.
Midfielder Gary (24) joined UCD from Cherry
Orchard in July 2004 and was
transferred to Stockport
three years later. After an
initial loan spell he moved
to Brighton in July 2009
and has been an influential
member of the stand out
team in the Division this
season.
Gary scored from the
penalty spot in the 2-1
victory over Swindon on 26th March and having won all eight of their league
games during that month. Brighton entered April 13 points clear of second placed
Huddersfield. We hope that Gary will be part of a league winning team very soon.

Donal McDermott joined
League One club
Bournemouth on loan from

and made his debut as a

26th March. And he made his
first start for the Cherries in

We wish Donal (21), a

Bournemouth, who occupy a

Commiserations to
Preston North End
goalkeeper Wayne
Henderson, who has
had to retire because of injury at the age of
27. Wayne has been plagued by back problems
in recent seasons and, after yet another
operation earlier in the season failed to sort
the matter, he felt he had little option but to
call it a day.
Wayne joined Aston Villa from the Orchard in
July 1999 and won an FA Youth Cup medal in
2002 when Villa beat Everton, including
Wayne Rooney, 4-2 on aggregate in the final.
He had loan spells at Wycombe and Notts
County before joining Brighton in January
2006. A year later Wayne was transferred to
Preston, but he was to make only eight
appearances for North End. Wayne made
seven senior international appearances for the
Republic of Ireland, the last coming in a 4-0
friendly win away to Denmark in August 2007.
We would like to wish Wayne the very best of
luck for the future.

Secretary’s
Report
GOOD RESULTS IN SFAI
CUP COMPETITIONS
Since our last newsletter the weather
has improved and our results have been
very good. In the SFAI cups our under
11s, 12s, 13s, 14s and 16s have
progressed to the business end of the
competitions and, hopefully, we will do
well in the big games that lie ahead.
And well done to the U15 Premier team
who have reached the Conway Cup
final. The Senior Sunday team also has a
big date in a national cup when they
face Sacred Heart in the FAI
Intermediate Cup semi-final on 10th
April and good luck to them.
On the representative front, Maxi
Kouogum, Jake Pilson and Jack Tuite are
in the DDSL under 13 squad due to
travel to Holland, while no fewer than
six 15 Premier players are in the
Republic of Ireland squad for the under
16 friendlies against Belgium in Cork on
14th and 16th April. The players
involved are Sean Coyne, Lee Desmond,
Shane Fagan, Sean Long, Glody Nsay
and Danny O’Reilly, so well done to all
nine boys. Hopefully, in time, some of
them will emulate Keith Fahey, a
goalscorer against Uruguay recently, and
play senior international football.
Finally, we were very disappointed to
learn that Wayne Henderson (Preston
North End) has been forced by injury to
retire from football at the age of 27.
Wayne gave fine service to Cherry
Orchard and we hope that things go
well for him in the future.

RICE AND EASY FOR ORCHARD
JAMIE HAT-TRICK THE CHERRY ON THE CAKE
Hat-trick hero Jamie Rice starred for Cherry
Orchard as they booked their spot in the last
16 of the SFAI Menton Seery Cup at the
expense of St Kevins Boys on The Lawn. The
Orchard from the Premier in DDSL just had
to much quality on the day for a St Kevins
side who deserve great credit for their run in
the competition.
grabbed two goals in the middle of the half
to take control of the game. The first came
when Ukek turned provider as he whipped in
a great ball that was collected by Jamie Rice
and he blasted home to make it 2-0. Rice
then grabbed his second and his side’s third
goal as he curled home a brilliant finish from
the edge of the box.
The home side began the game at a
blistering pace as they looked to stop Kevin’s
from getting their game going and picking
up any confidence. They almost took the lead
after four minutes when Cian Dunne played
a great ball into the path of Joshua Ukek,
but he fired just off target.
Rice then showed he was more than just a
goalscorer as he picked the ball up on the
left-hand side and skipped past two
defenders before showing great awareness to
pull the ball back into the path of Cian
Collins. Collins made no mistake in slotting
home to make it 4-0 at the break.
However, it wasn’t long before Ukek got his
name on the score sheet, collecting a long
ball and showing great pace as he left
behind the Kevins defence and slotted past
the keeper to give his side the advantage.
Kevins never really got going in the first half
as they found it hard to deal with the quality
of an impressive Orchard side. But to their
credit they rolled their sleeves up and came
out fighting in the second half, playing some
excellent stuff. They began the half much

But Kevin’s couldn’t get that goal and it was
Jamie Rice who once again came into the game
and showed his quality as he completed his
hat-trick. He received the ball on the edge of
the box and stepped inside his marker and
buried a shot into the bottom corner. The
scoring was rounded off with ten minutes left
when a flowing move from the home side saw
full-back Evan Farrell play a great ball into Cian
Cunne who once again showed his eye for a
pass. He picked out Oliver Dunne, who made no
mistake in slotting home to give his side a huge
lead.
This Orchard side have plenty to look forward
to and have to be one of the favourites to go
all the way in this competition.
Keith Fahey Scores
Against Uruguay
Well done to

City), who netted
a 47th minute
penalty in the
Republic of
Ireland’s 3-2
defeat by
Uruguay in the
friendly at the Aviva Stadium on 29th
March. Three days earlier Keith came
on as a 76th minute substitute in
Ireland’s 2-1 nwin over Macedonia in

venue.

the better and got amongst their more
illustrious opponents and they created a great
chance for the consolation they deserved.
Robert Dunne pulled a long ball down and
played in strike partner Louis Cassidy, whose
thumping effort was brilliantly saved by Oisin
McCarthy in the Orchard goal.

Orchard Reach Conway Cup Final
After Hard Fought Semi-final
The Orchard reached the domestic cup
final after a hard fought game played in
difficult conditions on Richmond Road.
Glen Murphy put the visitors in front
after 16 minutes, but they could not
relax until Azeeze Yusiff added a second
goal in stoppage time at the end of the
match.
Stella Maris were first to threaten when
John Cox got on the end of a free kick
from half way, only for Danny O’Reilly
to block his shot at the expense of a
corner. A minute later Danny O’Reilly’s
pass released Glen Murphy down the left
and his pull back was hooked over the
bar by Ethan Keogh.
The lead goal arrived on 16 minutes
when home keeper Danny Maguire
could only turn Adam Kelly’s well struck

shot onto a post and Glen Murphy
followed up to score from close range.
Neither goal was seriously threatened
until two minutes before half-time
when the home side’s Adam Wixted
burst clear through the middle, only for
the advancing Shane Fagan to half block
his effort and Sean Long got back to
clear the ball off the line.
Wixted again came close for Stella five
minutes after the break when his free
kick from a central position 25 yards
from goal was narrowly wide.
The home side threatened again seven
minutes later when Ola Mustapha beat
Shane Fagan to the ball on the backline
and his cross was eventually headed
clear by Ken Forrest. The defender then
came close at the other end after 18

come back off a post.
Both teams had a penalty
appeal turned down,
either side of a point

before the visitors sealed
victory in the final

Shane Fagan landed the
ball deep in the home

Azeeze Yusiff got the

rounded the goalkeeper
before slotting home.

Disappointment
Hard luck to Luke Gallagher of
the 16 Premier side, who was
a member of the Republic of
Ireland team that came agonisingly close to
reaching the European under 17 Championship
finals. In their qualifying group in Greece between
23rd abd 28th March Ireland drew 2-2 with
Denmark and 1-1 with the hosts, before beating
Latvia 4-1 in their final game. At that point Ireland
led the table but unfortunately, Denmark scored a
stoppage time winner against Greece to win the
group on seven points and qualify for the finals.
