Resources for French and Spanish students entering sixth grade Visit: www.duolingo.com Instructions for Duolingo Welcome to Foote language classes! As this is your first experience taking a language, doing some studying ahead of time will help you have a successful start in the fall. Duolingo is a free, online program. It is perfect program for independent study because it gives you plenty of guidance and feedback and allows you to track your progress. You can use a computer with internet access to work on Duolingo, or they also have a free mobile app available. Follow these instructions to complete your summer work on Duolingo. It may help to go through these instructions for the first time with a parent or adult to make sure that you follow them all thoroughly. After that, you will be ready to work on your own. 1. Go to Duolingo.com 2. Click “Get Started” 3. Choose “I want to learn Spanish” -or- “I want to learn French” 4. Click “Start tour” and follow the instructions to get a preview of how Duolingo works. 5. At the end of the tour, click “Regular 20XP per day.” You can change this later if you want, but regular is a good pace. 6. At the next screen, choose: Basics 1 -orPlacement test (Which one you choose is up to your teacher, based on your level of experience.) Choosing one of these will start your first Duolingo session. During a session: ● Follow the instructions for each question and enter your answer. ● After you enter an answer, click “check” to see if you were right. ● If you are right, it will make a chime sound and it will say “You are correct!” in the green section at the bottom. ● If you are wrong, it will make a different sound and the green section will turn red. ● Note that if you make a small mistake, the computer will make a chime sound, just like if you were right, but it will say “Almost correct!” This is why it is important to look in the green section at the bottom of the window. It will say there if you were correct or almost correct. ● ● If you were almost right or wrong, Duolingo will give you valuable feedback. Note whether any words are highlighted in red. Be sure to read whatever notes pop up in the window, including what is written in the green section at the bottom. Reading this information is a major way that you learn from Duolingo. If you have questions or you are confused, you can click on “Discuss Sentence,” in the green section at the bottom of the window. Maybe someone has already asked your question and there is an answer. If not, you can try posting a comment to see if you can get an answer to your question. Sometime during your first session, it will probably give you a speaking question. This means you can use your computer’s microphone to record your voice. The computer will “listen” to you and see if you have said the correct words, with reasonably good pronunciation. This is a valuable opportunity to practice your speaking. When this question comes up, it will say “Click on the microphone and...” A notification may pop up in your browser that asks you if you want to allow Duolingo to use your microphone. It is up to you whether or not you would like to allow this, but if you and your parents feel comfortable with it, we definitely recommend it. You will need to speak during your Spanish classes here at Foote and it is good to get some practice in. Once you allow it, Duolingo will regularly incorporate speaking questions into your sessions. Once you click deny, it most likely won’t give you any speaking questions in your sessions. I don’t know if there is a way to change it once you’ve chosen. There may be, and you can search the help if you need to. 7. After you finish your session, it will congratulate you on finishing your session. When it gets to this screen, click “Continue” at the bottom. It will tell you that in order to save your progress, you need to create a profile. Please create an account. You can use your google account or any other email address you wish. 8. Once you have created your profile, you are ready to use Duolingo regularly to practice. The home screen is very useful, as it shows you what lessons you have started and completed and which lessons are still to come. Each circle with a picture in it represents a different topic of study. Within each topic, there are multiple lessons. When you click on a circle, it shows you the lessons involved in that topic. It also gives you “Tips and Notes.” These are helpful as they explain the content of the lesson. This is a good place to go for help. To do a practice session, click on one of these circles. This will take you to a new screen that lists the lessons on this topic and gives the tips and notes. Choose the next lesson and click “Begin.” Duolingo also allows you to do review sessions rather than starting a new lesson. You can do this by clicking “Strengthen Skills” from the home screen. Note, you have to do the lessons in the order they are presented on the home screen. If the circle is grey, it means are not yet ready to do that lesson. 9. Once you have created your profile, you will need to share your progress with your teacher. At the top of the screen, you will see your username and an arrow next to it. Click on this arrow and choose “Settings.” On the right side of the screen you will see a list of options. Click on “Progress Sharing.” In the box marked “Share progress with…” enter your teacher’s email address: __________________________________________ This way, your teacher will be able to see how often you work in Duolingo and how many lessons you have completed. 10. Regular practice with Duolingo will ensure that you are ready to start strong in your language at Foote. Here is your goal: 1. Please complete all of the lessons up to and including: Time 2. 5 _ After you complete those lessons, please also complete: “Strengthening skills” sessions Resources and checklist for new sixth grade students enrolling in Chinese 欢迎 Huānyíng!
