(see ALASKA HIGHWAY section)
ary Spur Road a short distance to join the
Taylor Highway, which leads south back to
the Alaska Highway near Tok.
If you intend to make the complete loop,
there are 3 items to check on ahead of time.
First, if you are traveling in the spring or
early fall, be sure the George Black ferry is
operating. Typically the Yukon River is free
of ice and open for ferry traffic by the third
week of May, but it has opened as late as
June 22. Also, confirm that U.S. customs is
open on Top of the World Highway so that
you can cross into Alaska. Third, check on
current road conditions along the Top of the
World, Boundary Spur and Taylor highways.
Good contacts for current information are
the Visitor Information Centre in Dawson
City, phone (867) 993-5566, and the Klondike Visitors Association, phone (867) 9935575.
All of the Klondike Highway between the
Alaska Highway junction and Dawson City
is asphalt-surfaced. The scenic Top of the
World Highway is seal-coated with numerous gravel breaks and some hilly sections
on the Canadian portion. On the U.S. side,
Boundary Spur Road is gravel to Jack Wade
Junction on the Taylor Highway; the Taylor
Highway is narrow, gravel, winding road
with little or no shoulders south to Chicken,
then chip seal and pavement from Chicken
south to the Alaska Highway (see description
in TAYLOR HIGHWAY section). Drive with
your headlights on at all times.
For current road and weather conditions in Canada, phone (867) 456-7623, or
toll-free in Yukon 1-877-456-7623 or visit
www.511yukon.ca. Check on current road

more detailed log of the Taylor Highway,
see the TAYLOR HIGHWAY section on page

The route from Whitehorse to Dawson
City began as a trail, used first by Natives,
trappers and prospectors, and then by the
gold rush stampede during the Klondike
Gold Rush of 1897–98. Steamships also provided passenger service between Whitehorse
and Dawson City. A road was built connecting the Alaska Highway with the United
Keno Hill Mine at Mayo in 1950. By 1955,
the Mayo Road had been upgraded for automobile traffic and extended to Dawson City.
In 1960, the last of 3 steel bridges, crossing
the Yukon, Pelly and Stewart rivers, was
completed. The only ferry crossing remaining is the Yukon River crossing at Dawson
City. Mayo Road (Yukon Highway 11) from
Stewart Crossing to Mayo, Elsa and Keno
was redesignated the Silver Trail in 1985 (see
the “Silver Trail” road log on page 289 this
section).
Today, it is about a 6-hour drive via
Klondike Highway 2 from the Alaska Highway north of Whitehorse (turnoff at Milepost DC 894.8) to Dawson City. This
remarkably preserved gold rush town is a
national historic site and the major attraction on the Klondike Loop.
To complete the Klondike Loop after
visiting Dawson City, take the short ferry
ride across the Yukon River on the George
Black to the beginning of the aptly-named
Top of the World Highway, which offers
top-of-the-world views as it winds across
mountain ridges to the international border.
After crossing the border, drive the BoundThe MILEPOST®

conditions and construction on the Taylor
Highway by visiting 511.alaska.gov or phone
511.
Both the Taylor and Top of the World

effectively closes the roads for winter.

there may be a wait as long as 3 hours for
the Yukon River ferry at Dawson City during
peak hours. Also, U.S. and Canada Customs on Top of the World are open daily in
summer only (mid-May to late September,
depending on weather). Hours were 9 A . M . to
7 P . M . (Pacific time), 8 A . M . to 6 P . M . (Alaska
