Diction I MUSI 3324 Fall 2015, TR 2:00-2:55; FAC 206 Dr. Cameron Rose [email protected] | 903-566-7304 | FAC 2021 Hours: Posted at office or by appointment Overview MUSI 3324 is the first of a two-‐semester sequence of language diction courses for voice majors. This first semester course will cover an introduction of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), as well as fundamental elements of English, Latin, and Italian diction. Course Scope & Objectives Upon successfully completing this course, the student should be able to: 1. Identify the basic symbology and corresponding phones of the International Phonetic Alphabet for covered languages. 2. Demonstrate understanding and skill in writing and pronouncing IPA transcriptions of covered languages. 3. Demonstrate understanding and skill in proper diction during sung performances. Required Course Texts • Diction for Singers, 2nd edition, Joan Wall • International Phonetic Alphabet for Singers, Joan Wall Course Activities 1. Homework. Written homework including book worksheets, pronunciation exercises, and written transcriptions will be due according to the class schedule or as announced in class. (Homework = 40% of final grade) 2. Quizzes. (10% of final grade) 3. Tests. A midterm and final exam will be given to assess written and spoken diction and transcription ability. (Midterm = 10%, Final = 10% of final grade) 4. Songs. Preparation and performance of three solo songs will be required (one in each covered language). You may certainly work with your studio teacher on this. The performance of each song will be evaluated on standard musical elements, particularly diction as studied in class. (Each song = 10% of final grade) 5. Attendance. Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes. Excused absences on test or performance days are only given in the event of a pre-‐scheduled, university-‐sanctioned absence, or with a doctor’s note. Grading Grading scale: A = achieving at least 90% of possible scores, B=80%, C=70%, D=60%. Cheating, including plagiarism of any type will result in an automatic F for the course.
