Describing Matter Practice Quiz Mrs. Bousquet 8 Blue #1 Physical or Chemical • • • • • Texture – physical Color – physical Ability to react (rust, etc.) – chemical State of matter (solid, liquid, gas) – physical Flammability – chemical #2 What is an element? • An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by CHEMICAL OR PHYSICAL means. • Examples include aluminum, zinc, copper, iron #3 What is a compound? • A compound is a pure substance made of two or more elements CHEMICALLY COMBINED IN A SET RATIO. • Examples are carbon dioxide, salt, table sugar #4 How is a heterogeneous mixture different from a homogeneous mixture? • In a heterogeneous mixture you can see the different parts because it is NOT evenly mixed. • In a homogeneous mixture the parts are so evenly mixed you can’t see the parts. #5 How are compounds different than mixtures? • Compounds are PURE SUBSTANCES made of two or more elements chemically combined and the compound has DIFFERENT PROPERTIES than the uncombined elements. • Mixtures are two or more substances together in the same place but NOT chemically combined. In a mixture, each substance keeps its own properties. #6 Is melting a chemical or physical property? • Melting is a PHYSICAL property. When you observe melting, the substance is not changing into another substance, it is just changing physical state. #7 What elements make up plant sugar, C6H12O6? • C is for carbon (6 atoms of carbon) • H is for hydrogen (12 atoms of hydrogen) • O is for oxygen (6 atoms of oxygen) #8 Is seawater a mixture? • Seawater is not pure water, it has many substances dissolved or floating in it, such as salt, other minerals and substances (fish poop, etc.). There is no set ratio for seawater. #9 How could you retrieve roofing nails from a flower bed? • Use a strong magnet to wave over the flower bed to retrieve the nales. The iron in the nails will be attracted to the magnet. #10 What process could you use to get pure water out of sea water? • Distill the solution of seawater by boiling the seawater and capturing the water vapor in a tube, where the water vapor would condense and drip into a flask as pure water.
