Taking Care of Bats
Look up in the evening sky and you
are likely to see
bats gliding through
the air. Bats are
vital in controlling
insect pests, pollinating plants, and
dispersing seeds.
Unfortunately,
more than 50% of
the American bat
species are in
severe decline or
already listed as
endangered. They
are extremely
vulnerable to ex-
tinction for several
reasons. Many
species congregate
in large numbers,
making them easy
to burn, dynamite,
or poison. They are
also the slowest reproducing mammal
for their size with
most only giving
birth to one pup a
year.
Join us on Saturday, October 3 as
we help do our part
for bat conservation
by hosting a Build
Your Own Bat
House Workshop.
Sessions will be
offered at 10:00 AM
and 2:00 PM.
Space is limited to
10 participants per
session and registration is required.
All materials will be
provided thanks in
part to the generous donation of plywood by Diamond
Hill Plywood. To
sign up for the
workshop, call
(843) 389-0550.
Did You Know?
Did you know that there are no venomous
lizards in South Carolina? The animal pictured
to the right is a type of skink. The term skink
refers to a family of lizards. The blue tailed
young of several species of skinks are widely
referred to as “scorpions” and believed to
have a venomous sting. This is not true
although some scientists speculate that these
skinks taste bad to many predators. The blue
tail actually indicates it is a juvenile.

Tip of the Month
Try making your own dishwasher detergent that is environmentally friendly and inexpensive.
Combine 1 cup of baking soda, 1 cup of borax, 1/2 cup of salt, and 1/2 cup of citric acid. Use
1 tablespoon per load and keep the rinse aid container full of white vinegar. Store extra detergent in a tightly sealed mason jar. Making this mixture costs less than 1 penny per load!
