Weight and Capacity in
Customary Units
BEFORE
Now
WHY?
You used metric units of mass
and capacity.
You’ll use customary units of
weight and capacity.
So you can estimate weights, such
as that of a hang glider in Ex. 24.

Bakery If a baker slices a 1 pound loaf of bread into 16 slices, each
slice weighs 1 ounce. Knowing the weight of familiar objects, such as a
slice of bread, can help you to choose appropriate units.
Three customary units of weight are the ounce (oz), the pound (lb),
and the ton (T).

Choosing Units of Weight
Choose an appropriate customary unit to measure the weight.
1
1
a. An apple weighs 6 4 _?_.
b. A laptop computer weighs 6 4 _?_.
Solution
1
a. An apple weighs 6 4 ounces, because it is heavier than a slice of bread
and lighter than a soccer ball.
1
b. A laptop computer weighs 6 4 pounds, because it is heavier than a
soccer ball and much lighter than a compact car.

Capacity Five customary units of capacity are the fluid ounce (fl oz),
with
Vocabulary
the cup (c), the pint (pt), the quart (qt), and the gallon (gal).
Notice that there are two
types of ounces: the fluid
ounce (fl oz) used for
measuring capacity and
the ounce (oz) used for
measuring weight.

Choosing Units of Capacity
Choose an appropriate customary unit to measure the capacity.
a. large mug
b. water cooler
Solution
a. A large mug holds about as much as a pint-sized milk carton does.
You can use pints or one of the smaller units, fluid ounces or cups.
b. A water cooler holds much more than a gallon jug does. You can use
gallons or quarts, but you wouldn’t use the smaller units.

Choosing Customary Units
What does each measure describe
about an empty glass aquarium?
a. 55 gal
b. 45 lb
Solution
a. A gallon is a measure of capacity,
so 55 gallons describes the amount of water the aquarium can hold.
b. A pound is a measure of weight, so 45 pounds describes how much
the empty aquarium weighs.
