BUILDING LOG FOR CONFIGURING TGY 9X FOR SETTING UP SKYLARK DIANMU FLIGHT CONTROLLER (Ver. 3) This simple write-up is my personal sharing with someone who is new on using TURNIGY 9X (9X)(Stock Firmware) for setting up Skylark Dianmu Flight Controller (FC) only. My methodology solely built on a “try & errors” approach. Hence, please use the information in this document with caution. To begin with, the wiring of my FC for my Bixler (I) is depicted in [Photo 1]. Other photos can be found in the product page of this FC under HobbyKing.com. In my set-up, I did not use 12V (or 5V) power supply from the FC but a dedicated power supply from a 2nd battery to my camera and video TX. I think this approach can greatly simplify my wiring works since I am not a technical person. Beside, using single battery power supply for my setup is still possible via the balance plug of the main battery. Nevertheless, adding a noise filter will be necessary to filter out the interference from the motor as per the suggestion of many others (It is true). [Photo 1] One may like to know that the “GYROS” of this FC is integrated with the board of the GPS Antenna (GPS/INS) (many thanks to “oBUNDYo” for his sharing. Please refer to the threads under the Discussion forum of this product inside HobbyKing.com). In my opinion, this design has great advantage of fitting the FC into a smaller fuselage. [18 Feb 2013] I encountered problem when continued to use a 2nd battery set-up. A fully charged 3S battery would heat up my Sony Cam, and especially, the VTX which comes with the Hobby King 900Mhz 800W combo. Probably due to high voltage, the quality of the video would be very poor too. I didn’t face such problem initially. Might be the batteries were not fully charged during that time. I learnt it a hard way Updated by “cwfsc” on 15 Apr 2013 (Updates are marked in ‘blue’) 1 BUILDING LOG FOR CONFIGURING TGY 9X FOR SETTING UP SKYLARK DIANMU FLIGHT CONTROLLER (Ver. 3) by cutting an opening of my plane to retrieve the VTX cable. Eventually, I follow the wiring diagram supplied by Skylark (Drawing 1) to use the 12V power supply from the OSD (the yellow cable). Someone shared that the internal regulator of the OSD would step down the voltage from 12V to 9V if a 3S battery is used. From the forum setup by SkylarkPFV.com, some RC pilots shared that they used 4S battery to obtain 12v output (after step down) for their video setup. They suggested 9V output would be too low for some video system. Fortunately, my Song Cam and the VTX can work with this set-up well with supply from a 3S battery. I have since removed the heat sink from the VTX. My rewiring work is shown in Photo [4-6]. Set CH 5 as GEAR and CH8 as PIT TRIM. • Go to PROG.MIX • Set MIX1 to ACT o MASTER to GYR o SLAVE to AUX (2nd AUX for CH8)(Look carefully, there are two AUXs) o OFFSET to 000 o UPRATE to 100 o DNRATE to 100, and o SW to NOR • Set MIX2 mostly as the same as MIX1, except: o UPRATE to 000 o DNRATE to 000, and o SW to ID1 • I did the follow for MIX3 but I think it may not be necessary (my analogy is at the end of this document). o o o o Similar to MIX1, except: UPRATE to -100 DNRATE to -100 SW to ID2 [Drawing 1] Once the above set-up is done, one can connect the FC with battery power supply(ies). After an initial start-up, a “FLY, OSD, AUTOPILOT” Menu will appear briefly (please refer to the user manual available on-line). Get ready to put the 3-way Switch from ‘N’(NOR) to ‘1’(ID1) position, use the PIT TRIM to scroll along the options and trigger the “Gear” switch for a timely execution. Once it is time-out, the system will go into the FLY mode directly. According to the user manual, one can Updated by “cwfsc” on 15 Apr 2013 (Updates are marked in ‘blue’) 3 BUILDING LOG FOR CONFIGURING TGY 9X FOR SETTING UP SKYLARK DIANMU FLIGHT CONTROLLER (Ver. 3) operate SWITCH three times to activate the “FLY, OSD, AUTOPILOT” Menu again. Unfortunately, I could not achieve this so far (Hope someone can teach me how to do it). In addition, the user menu focuses on the configuration of AUTOPILOT Submenu but not the OSD Submenu. For example, I don’t know the difference between Radar GroundView [Photo 2] and Radar SkyView [Photo 3]. [Photo 2] [Photo 3] Please note that my ID1 is used to activate PIT TRIM for scrolling along the menu though toggling the 3-way switch between ‘N’(NORM), “1”(ID1) & “2”(ID2) can also achieve “scrolling” function. However, putting the 3-way switch to ID2 will cause GEAR to scroll automatically after each SWITCH. This has given me a hard time till I realise it after sometimes later. Before your fly, do put your 3-way switch back to “Nor”. Otherwise, your control surfaces can be affected. Updated by “cwfsc” on 15 Apr 2013 (Updates are marked in ‘blue’) 4 BUILDING LOG FOR CONFIGURING TGY 9X FOR SETTING UP SKYLARK DIANMU FLIGHT CONTROLLER (Ver. 3) [18 Feb 2013] In the user manual, it said that user could quit the OSD Details-mode (by sliding the “Switch” channel 3 times). Configuration Mode can then be switched for necessary adjustment. For the above-mentioned set-up, operate the Switch (Gear) 3 times (to toggle it between Details-mode and Simple-mode). Immediately, switch the 3-way switch from the Nor position to the ID1 position and then back to the Nor position. The Configuration mode will appear. In my current set-up, operating the Switch (Gear), Pit Trim knob or the 3-way switch will have impact to the elevator. This will cause trouble with using the Pit Trim knob to activate Manual Mode, Attitude Control Mode or Home Mode (must obtain good GPS signal first). Further study will be required in this area (hope someone can share their findings with me). When mounting the GPS/INS module, one may like to pay attention to the levelling and the positioning (with reference to the plane) of the module. There is no provision for calibrating the GYROS inside the package. For the above-mentioned set-up, positions of Gear switch, Aux 3 3-way switch and Pit Trim knob provide various outcomes as below: • Gear switch “UP” (near yourselves) displays full OSD screen o Pit Trim knob turned to RHS Aux 3 in “N” = Control in Manual Mode and no auto stabilization from flight controller Aux 3 in “1” = Control in Manual Mode and no auto stabilization from flight controller (Same as “N”) Aux 3 in “2” = Control in “A1” mode. Flight controller provides auto stabilization. All control surfaces can still be controlled manually but the range of control will be limited to the setting of Autopilot_PID inside Autopilot Sub-menu o Pit Trim knob turned to LHS • Aux 3 in “N” = Control in “A1” mode. Flight controller provides auto stabilization. All control surfaces cannot be controlled manually except rudder & throttle controls. Aux 3 in “2” = “RTL” mode. Flight controller provides auto stabilization. All control surfaces cannot be controlled manually except rudder & throttle controls. The movements of control surfaces are rather aggressive under auto stabilization. One may consider lower the setting of Autopilot_PID inside Autopilot Sub-menu considerably.
