Healing Hands A Monthly Newsletter For The Friends and Patients of: Chirolife Family Chiropractic Centre November 2013 Dear Friends and Patients Firstly, I apologise for the lateness of this month’s newsletter but I have a good excuse – moving house! I now know why moving is considered one of the top 5 reasons we get stressed in our lives. After finally getting everything into the new place, the mammoth task of unpacking and organizing starts. This is one of the most frustrating times in that with all the good intentions of setting up my home office and getting my desk ready for work – a priority in my life – do you think I could find the box with those bits and pieces needed to hook up computers, printers, extension leads and power boards – not on my life. What should take a couple of hours turns out to consume the day. However, persistence, endurance and frustration eventually give way to everything being ready to start working again. So here is this months newsletter.:) Spinal Curves The four spinal curves cushion the effects of stress and permit greater turning and bending. When you think of your spine, do you think of a straight row of bones that go from the bottom of your brain to the bottom of your back? In reality, the spine is made up of four different curves that provide balance and flexibility to your body and help prevent injury. These curves also allow the spine to support 10 times more weight than it could if the curves were missing! You can more easily see these curves when you view a model of the spine from a side view. The four types of spinal curves are: • Cervical Lordosis – A backward “C”-shaped curve located in the upper part of the spine. This curve helps to keep your head from moving too far forward. Neck pain usually results when there is any loss to this curve. Also seen with Forward Head Posture as a result of using computers, mobile phones and iPad type devices. • Thoracic Kyphosis – The “C”-shaped curve of the upper and mid back, comprised of 12 vertebrae • Lumbar Lordosis – The five vertebrae of the lower back that are also in the shape of a backward “C.” This area of the spine faces backward when seen from the side. • Sacral Kyphosis – The sacrum is a triangular-shaped bone at the base of the spine, between both hip bones. It is also a “C”-shaped curve. Presented by Chirolife, 100 Lower Plenty Road, Rosanna. As an infant’s motor skills begin to develop, the baby learns to hold its head up, sit, crawl, stand up and walk – all causing significant muscle development and allowing more weight to be shifted to the spine. This also begins the development of the additional spinal curves. It is important that these curves be properly maintained to balance your body and to avoid pain and injury. Proper lifting requires that you bend at the knees, instead of at the waist, to keep your spine from straightening. Of course, regular chiropractic check ups and adjustments help to maintain your proper spinal curves. In addition, there are specific products, such as cervical pillows, that also help to keep spinal curves in place and keep you out of pain! Burn Those Holiday Calories BEFORE You Gain Them! While the holidays are a joyous time for most of us, there seems to be that lingering fear in some peoples’ minds that it’s “The Season for Plumping Up.” I recently found twenty pretty cool ways to counteract this caloric onslaught, so here we go! 1) Clean the house for 2 hours; turn on your favorite music and you can probably boost that number by 15% (if you dance while you vacuum, of course). 2) Garden for an hour and a half. 3) Hit the slopes; 65 minutes of just downhill skiing burns 500 calories; you only need 50 minutes of cross country skiing to burn the same. 4) One hour of Zumba burns roughly 500 calories, if you give it your full effort throughout the entire class. 5) Play 55 Minutes of racquetball. Grab a partner and you won’t even realize that you’re working out. 6) One hour and 15 minutes of lawn mowing does the trick. Sorry, riding mowers don’t provide the same workout! 7) 45 Minutes of back to back bodyweight exercises burns 500 calories. 8) Like horseback riding? An hour and 45 minutes of horseback riding burns 500 calories. Who needs the gym? 9) Two hours and ten minutes of guitar playing (standing) burns 500 calories and turns you into a rock-star. 10) Do 120 minutes of belly dancing. As a bonus, it tones your core. 11) Jump rope for only 42 minutes to burn your caloric goal; it certainly works but do beware of terribly sore calf muscles the next day. Remember to stretch. 12) Punish a punching bag for 70 minutes. Think of someone who annoys you and swing away. 13) 45 Minutes of rugby burns 500 calories. 14) Play a full court basketball game for 50 minutes; the interval type cardio will boost your cardiovascular endurance, and rev your metabolism. 15) 50 Minutes of shoveling snow will meet your quota. 16) 40 Minutes of martial arts blasts 500 calories, along with reducing stress and increasing focus. Judo, chop! 17) Do 40 Minutes of rock climbing. Wear a helmet! 18) Walk at a moderately brisk pace of 6.4 km/hr for 90 minutes. Presented by Chirolife, 100 Lower Plenty Road, Rosanna. To burn 500 calories playing volleyball, you’ll need an hour and 45 minutes of play if you’re playing in a gym, or 50 minutes if you’re playing in the sand. 20) Running at 9.6 km/hr (a ten minute mile) for 42 minutes will burn 500 calories.
