Groundhog Day - Village Tours

Groundhog Day
January 30 - February 7, 2014
Join us on a journey to the small town of Punxsutawney to see Phil, its most famous resident!
Day 1 L
St. Louis, MO
What has four legs, is 127 years old, and casts a mean
shadow? Punxsutawney Phil, of course! Join our first
pilgrimage to see this famous groundhog as he predicts
the weather, as just part of a brand new tour with lots of
big-name attractions. Drive as far as St. Louis today,
with a stop in Kansas City for lunch.
Day 2 CB
Chicago, IL
Board an Amtrak train to Chicago this morning, arriving
in time for a visit to the Hancock Observatory. The
panoramic view from here includes four states, and the
famed Magnificent Mile will be at our feet. Then, take
our seats for the classic Broadway musical, 42nd Street,
produced at the historic Paramount Theatre.
Day 5 D
Gettysburg, PA
Begin our day with a special trip aboard a working museum. The Duquesne Incline has connected residents
and businesses of Duquesne Heights with the rest
of the city since 1877, and we have a chance to ride
on a cable car to the top and witness one of the most
spectacular views in America. Travel to Gettysburg,
arriving in time for a dining experience reminiscent of
the Civil War era.
Day 3 CB
Day 8 CB
St. Peters, MO
Visit the Clabber Girl Museum and experience the history of one of the oldest brands in America and delight in
the art of home baking. Then, tour MY Garage Corvette
Museum to learn about how one man’s passion for cars
led him from parts sales to specialized accessories to
manufacturing, all while collecting all things Corvette.
Dubois, PA
Travel one day closer to the famous groundhog today.
Day 4 CB, L
Pittsburgh, PA
It’s Groundhog Day! Be a part of the excitement as
tens of thousands of enthusiasts make a celebrity of this
unassuming rodent. Lots of good fun is the tradition here
in Punxsutawney, and it will be worth the early wakeup
call! Learn the lore about Phil, including the Inner Circle,
Gobblers Knob, and all those top hats! The Church
Brew Works is a local brewpub established in a former
Roman Catholic Church. They concoct a holy brew at
this sanctuary-turned-brewery, and the ambiance will
certainly contribute to the tasty lunch we’ll enjoy. Spend
the rest of the afternoon at the Carnegie Museums in
Pittsburgh. From rock groups to Campbell’s soup, from
T. Rex to submarine decks—the four museums are home
to hundreds of thousands of objects, including some
of the world’s great art and the remains of the Earth’s
largest prehistoric creatures.
Day 9 CB, L
Day 6 B, L
Gettysburg, PA
This morning, learn about the tactics used in the Civil
War battle at Gettysburg and marvel that more men
lost their lives in this battle than in any other in North
America at Gettysburg Battlefield. Join a professional
guide who will bring the events to life. Enjoy lunch at a
tavern popular for centuries, then visit the Eisenhower
National Historic Site, home and farm of General and
President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The farm served the
President as a weekend retreat and a meeting place
for world leaders. With its peaceful setting and view
of South Mountain, it was a much needed respite from
Washington and a backdrop for efforts to reduce Cold
War tensions.
Day 7 B, L
Columbus, OH
Lunch is served on our way to Ohio, which teems with
creative and unique products, many associated with the
Longaberger Basket legacy. We’ll make a photo stop
at the distinctive corporate headquarters of this distinctly
American company.
16
Home
Before finishing our journey home, we will be treated to
a tour and lunch at the Bingham-Waggoner Estate, a
beautiful mansion that was home to a prominent statesman and a family of millers in Independence. Learn
about the house’s history, which provides insight into
the town’s past as well. Arrive home with a better idea
of the spring to come.
