Discussion:
Provide each kid an outine
printout of a clownfish and
facilitate clownfish collage
making.
Show the students a photo of a clownfish. Some of them will identify
it as Nemo due to the popular Disney movie. You can talk about the
film to break the ice.
1. Cut orange, white and
black crepe paper into
tiny pieces by hand.
2. Sort the colors on the
table to avoid confusion.
3. Paste the tiny pieces of
colored paper on the
printout based on the
color image provided.
While the students are
making their collage, ask
them to think of a name for
their clownfish.
After creating the collage,
divide the class into small
groups. Members then take
turns to introduce their
clownfish and to identify at
least five parts of its body.
Direct the students’ attention to basic clownfish facts such as the
following:
1. Types. What types of clownfish are there? There are 30 species
of clownfish with different markings. This one is the ocellaris
clownfish.
2. Name. Explain why the fish is called:
a. Clownfish – Because it seems they are wearing clown costumes
b. Anemonefish – Another name for a clownfish is an anenomefish
- because it’s dependent on its sea anemone host for survival.
Discuss how they mutually benefit from each other’s presence.
2. Habitat. Show the kids a world map and point to the Indian and
Pacific oceans, where clownfish can be found. Tell them that
clownfish live in coral reefs in warm waters.
3. Food. Discuss that clownfish are omnivorous. In the ocean, they
primarily feed on zooplanktons, but can take undigested food from
their host anemone. In an aquarium, cultured clownfish feed on
fish pellets.
Start identifying the parts of a clownfish. Explain what each identified
body part is for. The following page is your guide for this section.
Result: Students will understand and appreciate the nature of clownfish.
