FROM THE CHAIR & PRESIDENT
T
he 2014-15 Season provided a number of opportunities for us to reflect on
Merrimack Repertory Theatre’s past, plan for our future, and show gratitude
to the people who made it all possible. On behalf of the Board of Trustees
and MRT staff, we want to thank everyone who has supported Lowell’s
professional theatre company over the years. As subscribers, donors, patrons,
and volunteers, you have been critical to MRT’s success.
We knew at the start of the 2014-15 Season that it would be MRT’s final year
under the leadership of Artistic Director Charles Towers, as he announced his
plans to step down the previous spring after 14 years with the company. He
started the season with Year Zero, a play about the Cambodian-American
experience which allowed the theatre to interact in a meaningful way with the
large Cambodian population in Lowell and opened doors to new community
partnerships. Throughout the season, Charles’ commitment to telling relevant
stories at the highest levels of production continued, concluding with the
extraordinarily well-received production of The Outgoing Tide. The culmination of
Charles’ final season occurred when we presented him with the Artistic
Achievement Award in June at the Artistic Excellence Auction.
As we celebrated our past successes, we also looked excitedly toward the future
with the hiring of Sean Daniels as the company’s next Artistic Director. Sean’s
hiring was announced in December 2014 and he worked throughout the spring
to prepare for his first season at the helm. With Sean’s arrival, we are now poised
to head into strategic planning that will set a course for MRT’s success in both
the short and long term.
The 2014-15 Season also saw a robust enhancement of our audience and
community engagement program. We offered an unprecedented number of
engagement opportunities during Year Zero with remarkable success and
carried that momentum through the year. Post-show discussions were held
following nearly every Wednesday performance with representatives from
community organizations who spoke about the themes of the play and their
relevance to our society.
We continued to welcome students from throughout the region to student
matinees. Year Zero proved to be the most popular show with schools in many
years and we filled four student performances.
Financially, the year presented some unexpected challenges, but the
organization remains poised for future success.Though some revenue goals
were not met, expenses were managed in a way that minimized effect to the
bottom line. Despite expenses related to the search for a new artistic director,
which were not anticipated when the 2014-15 budget was passed, the company
remains free of structural debt.
It is undeniable that without you, our loyal supporters, MRT could not have
achieved such heights. We look forward to sharing the successes of the 2015-16
Season with you as we launch a new era in MRT’s history.
Sincerely,
Nancy L. Donahue

EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
& AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT
MRT
is committed to engaging the whole
community, regardless of background or
economic status, and offers a variety of ticket
discounts in order to stay accessible to everyone.
CHILDREN AND YOUTH INITIATIVES
Panelists discuss Year Zero in a post-Show Discussion.
MRT’s Student Matinee Series provides opportunities for
local middle and high school students to experience an MRT
performance at the Nancy L. Donahue Theatre in Liberty Hall.
Comprised of matinee performances in a professional setting,
study guides integrated with the curriculum, and post-show
discussions with the artists, this program helps students
explore and understand the issues and possibilities that
MRT’s plays inspire.
PROFESSIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS
MRT offers four paid, full-time apprenticeships each year, in
company management, stage management, lighting and sound,
and wardrobe. Semester-long internships for college credit
are available in marketing, development, and public relations.

Target
AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT
MRT has long hosted post-show discussions with the artists
after every Thursday performance.
This year we added Wednesday Post-Show Discusssions
with community members discussing themes from the play.
This addition to the schedule resulted in deeper partnerships
with local organizations and a move toward doubling our
audience participation.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
MRT hosts UMass Lowell Student Night and Middlesex
Community College Night performances. Students receive
discounted tickets and a pre-show reception. Community ticket
discounts include “$5 Night,” “Lowell Night,” and discounts for
senior citizens, veterans, and students.

This program is supported in part by grants from the
Burlington, Chelmsford, Dracut, Lawrence, and Lowell
Cultural Councils, local agencies which are supported
by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

SPECIAL
EVENTS
T
ogether with the Friends of MRT (a volunteer group tasked
with working with the staff on fundraising events),
Merrimack Repertory Theatre raised more than $116,000
through fundraising events during the 2014-15 Season.
HALLOWEEN FRIGHT TOUR
In late October 2014, MRT transformed its backstage areas for
two nights of haunted backstage tours and one afternoon of
family-friendly trick-or-treating. Working with students from UMass
Lowell Theatre Arts Program, Merrimack College Department of
Visual and Performing Arts, and Middlesex Community College
Theater Performing Arts Department, the events helped us to
reach out to college students and strengthen our relationships
with our educational partners. The events themselves welcomed
many people to MRT for the very first time.

HOLIDAY BASKET RAFFLE
The annual tradition of raffling two baskets, each filled
with goodies valued at over $1400, continued, raising
more than $10,000 for the theatre and creating a festive
mood in the lobby. Members of the Friends of MRT,
Board of Trustees, and staff sold raffle tickets in the
lobby at every performance of 13 Things About Ed
Carpolotti, which ran from November 26 – December 1.
The lucky winners were Donna Hoyt and Patti Markuns.
Nancy Donahue, Philip Donahue, and Maxwell Towers
ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE AUCTION
On June 18, more than 300 people filled the UMass Lowell Inn
& Conference Center to celebrate and support MRT. Through
sponsorships, ticket sales, a silent auction, raffle, and live auction
featuring Hank Phillipi Ryan, the event brought in more than
$1000,000 to support the theatre’s productions and educational
programming. The highlight of the evening was the presentation
of the Artistic Achievement Award to Charles Towers in honor of
his 14 years leading MRT as Artistic Director. Allyn Burrows, who
was featured earlier that year as an actor in Oceanside, and who
is Artistic Director at the Actors’ Shakespeare Project, spoke
about Charles’ impact. Board Chair and MRT Founder Nancy L.
Donahue then officially presented the award, followed by Charles’
moving speech paid tribute to the audiences, staff, and supporters
of the theatre.
