A boxing match in Brooklyn; life in postwar Bosnia and Herzegovina;
the daily routine of a Nigerian midwife; an intimate family moment at
home: these scenes and others are woven into CAMERAPERSON, a tapestry of footage captured over
the twenty-five-year career of documentary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson. Through a series of
episodic juxtapositions, Johnson explores the relationships between image makers and their subjects,
the tension between the objectivity and intervention of the camera, and the complex interaction
of unfiltered reality and crafted narrative. A work that combines documentary, autobiography, and
ethical inquiry, CAMERAPERSON is both a moving glimpse into one filmmaker’s personal journey and a
thoughtful examination of what it means to train a camera on the world.

A mysterious drifter named Paul and his dog Abbie make their way
toward Mexico through the barren desert of the old West. In an attempt to shorten their journey, they
cut through the center of a large valley—landing themselves in the forgotten town of Denton—a place
now dubbed by locals as a “valley of violence.” The once popular mining town is nearly abandoned, and
controlled by a brash group of misfits and nitwits—chief among them, the seemingly untouchable, Gilly
who is the troublemaking son of the town’s unforgiving Marshal. An inevitable act of violence starts a
disastrous chain reaction, infecting the petty lives of all involved and quickly drags the whole town into
the bloody crosshairs of revenge.

(Bruce Young, 2016, 84 mins, DCP)
BLOOD LIONS is a documentary feature film which follows Ian Michler, a South African environmental
journalist and safari operator, and Rick Swazey, an American hunter, on their journey to the heart of
darkness that lies within the predator breeding and canned hunting industries. It is a story that blows
the lid off the claims made by these operators in attempting to justify what they do in the name of
conservation.
Director Bruce Young, and international wildlife expert and CEO of Born Free USA, Adam M. Roberts,
will share insights and information about the South African predator breeding and canned hunting
industry gained while making the film. They will also discuss the international campaign to close the
industry down.

From Park Chan-wook, the celebrated director of OLDBOY, LADY VENGEANCE and STOKER, comes a
ravishing new crime drama. Park presents a gripping and sensual tale of two women—a young Japanese
Lady living on a secluded estate, and a Korean woman who is hired to serve as her new handmaiden,
but is secretly plotting with a conman to defraud her of a large inheritance. Inspired by the novel
Fingersmith by British author Sarah Waters, THE HANDMAIDEN borrows the most dynamic elements
of its source material and combines it with Park Chan-wook’s singular vision to create an unforgettable

August 1 1966 was the day our innocence was shattered. A sniper rode
the elevator to the top floor of the iconic University of Texas Tower
and opened fire, holding the campus hostage for 96 minutes in what
was a previously unimaginable event. TOWER combines archival
footage with rotoscopic animation of the dramatic day, based entirely on first person testimonies from
witnesses, heroes and survivors, in a seamless and suspenseful retelling of the unfolding tragedy. The
film highlights the fear, confusion, and visceral realities that changed the lives of those present, and the
rest of us, forever—a day when the worst in one man brought out the best in so many others.

TRANSREELIZATION
A CELEBRATION OF TRANSGENDER FILM
Saturday, November 5 at 2pm
Now in its third year, this celebration of short films about the
transgender experience founded by Lana Wachowski (director/
producer of THE MATRIX movies, SENSE8, V FOR VENDETTA, and
more) has developed a cult following that has catapulted this once
small and intimate event to the prestigious Music Box Theatre. With intriguing and thought‑provoking
films curated for both a touching and educational experience, TransReelization is a one-of-a-kind event.
Best of all, proceeds of the event benefit Chicago House’s TransLife Center, which provides housing,
employment, legal, and healthcare services for the city’s trans community, a population that struggles
to find equal access to many of the critical services that so many others take for granted.

ultimately becomes yet another unrequited love. Disillusioned as her world continues to close in on

After traveling the world alongside migrating birds and diving the
oceans with whales and manta rays, Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud
return to more familiar ground, the lush forests and megafauna that emerged across Europe following
the last Ice Age. Winter had gone on for 80,000 years when, in a short period of time the ice retreated,
the landscape metamorphosed, the cycle of seasons was established and the beasts occupied their
new kingdom. It was only later that man arrived to share this habitat, first as migratory hunter/gatherers,
then making inroads as settled agriculturalists, and later more dramatically via industry and warfare.
SEASONS, with its exceptional footage of animals in the wild, is the awe-inspiring tale of the shared
history that inextricably binds humankind with the natural world.

THE MUSIC BOX’S ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS 2016
2 DOUBLE FEATURES!
For over three decades, the Music Box has celebrated the holidays with Jimmy Stewart and Bing Crosby.
However, if those guys aren’t your cup of eggnog, the Music Box’s Alternative Christmas Double Feature
invites you to spend the holidays with Buddy the Elf, John McClane, Gizmo and every working English actor
from the early 2000s.
That’s right, this year we’re doubling up with two Alternative Christmas double features! Fall in love and
stay young at heart with ELF and LOVE ACTUALLY (Who knew 2003 would gift us two new holiday
classics?). Or if you’re in the mood for some 1980s action, defend Nakatomi Plaza and the small town of
Kingston Falls with DIE HARD and GREMLINS!

CHRISTMAS SHOW
(John McTiernan, 1988, 133 mins, 35mm)
GREMLINS
One of the most popular and beloved Christmas traditions in Chicago is celebrating its
33rd anniversary this year. Come celebrate the holidays with the Music Box!
Each year, holiday revelers are greeted by none other than Santa Claus, live and in person. Santa welcomes
the audience and, accompanied by the theater organist, leads them in the singing of the most cherished
Christmas carols of all time. The lyrics are projected onto the theater’s screen so no one misses a chance
to sing their hearts out.
Then the audience sits back and enjoys a Christmas movie classic. Some folks like to keep the music going
and opt to see WHITE CHRISTMAS so they can sing the timeless lyrics of Irving Berlin along with Bing
Crosby, Danny Kay and Rosemary Clooney. Others prefer to cheer for Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey
and hiss Mr. Potter during a showing of the heart-warming IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (Frank Capra, 1946).

BLOOD AND SNOW
A Glimpse at the Sexually Charged THE HANDMAIDEN
By Steve “Capone” Prokopy
The novel on which director Chan-wood Park’s THE
HANDMAIDEN is based is Sarah Waters’ “Fingersmith,”
a literary descendant of Dickens’ “Oliver Twist.”
Set in Victorian-era London, it’s about a group of
abandoned children who are trained by a professional
scoundrel to fleece the rich, using every trick in the
book from pickpocketing to far longer and more
sinister cons. Park and co-writer Seo-Kyung Chung
have transformed 1800s England to 1930s Korea, in
the period of Japanese occupation, when passing for
Japanese—or at least speaking the language fluidly—
was considered a benefit among many native Koreans.

ILS.
THE HANDMAIDEN is told in three sections, the
second and third of which, I can tell you virtually
nothing about without ruining some exceptionally
clever writing. What can be said is that these later sections revisit a great deal of what is laid out in the first, but
from a different perspective that makes you question nearly everything we’ve already learned. And like many of
director Park’s previous works (SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE, OLDBOY,
LADY VENGEANCE, THIRST, STOKER), there is a taste for revenge and comeuppance on display that borders on
masterful and certainly is quite delicious when served ice cold.
The mastermind of a scheme to relieve Japanese heiress Lady Hideko (Min-hee Kim) of her vast fortune from
under the nose of her domineering Uncle Kouzuki (Jin-woong Jo) belongs to Count Fijiwara (Jung-woo Ha from
THE YELLOW SEA), who maintains a stable of young street urchins to do his criminal bidding. But for this
particular confidence trick, he selects Sook-Hee (relative newcomer Tae Ri Kim) whom he trains in the ways
of a lady’s maid in order for her to get hired by the Lady and slowly become her confidante. Although the Count
has given Sook-Hee all the ammunition she needs to talk him up to her Ladyship, something unexpected happens
between the two women as they bond. They begin to have feelings for each other that could be the beginnings
of a love affair, throwing something of a wrench into the Count’s carefully worked out scam.
Over the course of THE HANDMAIDEN’s journey, it shifts from being a film about the making of a false love to a
tale of a very real one between these exquisitely drawn characters who both have issues with identity. Another
common theme in several of Park’s other movies is a fixation on unusual or unsavory sexual practices, and we come
to discover that the Uncle has been grooming Hideko to perform a very precise and strange fetish ritual that is
impossible to explain—you just have to witness it and try not to be seduced in the process.
As for the mysteriously second and third section of THE HANDMAIDEN, all you need to know is that Park doubles
down on the cliche that nothing is as it seems. We get a glimpse inside an insane asylum, some rather nasty torture
devices are brought out of storage, and things that were mildly sexy in the first act get even sexier and more erotic.
And the film doesn’t stop at being simply a psychosexual thriller; it has a wicked sense of humor and it reveals some
absolutes in the world of sex, which is that it can unlock inhibitions in the best and worst ways imaginable. For
every example of awakening sexuality being a force for good in someone’s life, we see it pervert and prove harmful
to another. This is easily Park’s most sexually charged work, which is a good thing, since his focus seems to be on
making sure the women get theirs before the men are even considered.
THE HANDMAIDEN is ambitious, hypnotic and elegantly constructed, even with all of its countless twists and
misdirections. And as much as the film is about good people attempting to exit this scenario intact, the greater
pleasure is seeing those that would harm slowly lose their power over others until they are empty husks that were
once human beings. It’s an astonishing achievement that should not only be seen, but viewed on the biggest screen
you can find.

DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I
LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING
AND LOVE THE BOMB
(Stanley Kubrick, 1964, 95 mins, 35mm)
Wednesday, November 23 at 7:30pm
With the election finally over, let’s all enjoy some
light “Is It Still Funny?” escapism with Stanley
Kubrick’s romp about efforts to avert an accidental
nuclear holocaust. So far‑fetched now, right? Um…well…OK, we’re in black comedy territory here
with Peter Sellers’ President Merkin Muffley (that name!) leading the War Room efforts to call back
nuke‑carrying B-52 bombers en route to the Soviet Union and its doomsday machine. Sellers also plays
British Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake and ominous ex-Nazi Dr. Strangelove while George C. Scott’s Gen.
Buck Turgidson blusters, Sterling Hayden’s Jack D. Ripper warns of fluoridation, and Slim Pickens’ Major
T.J. “King” Kong prepares for the ride of his life.
The American Film Institute ranked “Dr. Strangelove” No. 3 on its 100 greatest comedies list, and it
was in the first group of films selected by the Library of Congress for preservation. Will this satire still
decimate its target?
