May/June Newsletter | 2015 A Time of Transformation and Celebration: Reflections on Our Eighth and Twelfth Grade Classes The curtain rises on the palace of Theseus and talk of impending nuptials, the opening scene in an enchanted evening with star-crossed lovers, royal fairies, wood sprites, and elves. It is the eighth grade production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, William Shakespeare’s most popular comedy, performed before an enthusiastic community audience during a three-night run at Dakin Hall in late May, a capstone of the students’ grade school experience together. After the final bows, the class regroups for a night of rest then sets off to Ashland, Oregon. The weeklong trip combines adventure (rafting), entertainment (theater), community, and reflection. The play and class trip mark important transitions for the class, many of whom began with their Class Teacher, Tamar Resnick, in first grade. With these final events, as through the past year, the students are called upon to take on new responsibilities for themselves and in collaboration with classmates. Through the curriculum, the eighth graders have been increasingly challenged to think critically and creatively, exploring topics like physiology and physics, the Reformation and the American Revolution. They are in a period of transformation and some tumult in which adolescence firmly takes root. And adolescents, according to Rudolf Steiner, “have the longing Photo Credit: Kelli Yon Diane David, Stepping Down After Decades with SFWS ~Joan Caldarera Diane David wore the perfect Halloween costume for years, an apron hung all over with dolls. She was the woman in the shoe, with so many children…But Diane always knew what to do where children were are concerned. She and her husband John constitute a rarified class in the school community: mother of 6 children, all of whom went through the Waldorf School. And Diane has always been surrounded by adoring little ones, even as she is now with her eight grandchildren, all of whom are drawn to her warmth and full-hearted care. We have been lucky to have had Diane David teaching our youngest students, first in the original Elves’ Corner home daycare, and then in the SFWS kindergarten—for almost 30 years all together. She is now recognized as a master teacher, and is sought after in teacher education programs where she loves to guide the next generation of teachers, and in the work of the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America (WECAN). She is a regular at international early childhood conferences, and seems to know everyone. We at SFWS are the grateful ones: honored to have gotten to know her and deeply benefited from her daily presence. We wish her all the best as she retires not from teaching, that would be impossible, but from being at the school everyday. We will miss her grounded presence. Diane used to rise regularly at dawn in order to fold the laundry, swim a few laps, and read the paper, all before going over the day’s story, getting her children off to school and arriving in the classroom in time to get the soup going or arrange the flowers. All of this, after having taken in a play at ACT the night before and planned a festive meal for her extended family and friends for the weekend. Or, maybe she attended an SFWS Board meeting or one for the Performing Arts Workshop she championed. So many people counted on Diane over the years, and she always had room for one more: one more request or one more child or one more person at her table or observing in her kindergarten. She remains patient, giving, keenly insightful, and loyal. Meanwhile on the high school campus, the seniors rehearse their play, a modern adaptation of the Greek myth of Jason and the Argonauts and the “first voyage of the world.” On their quest, the players are faced with questions of glory, destiny, love, and commitment. It is a tradition at SFWHS for the graduating students to offer a parting gift to the community as they prepare to leave and meet their futures. With the gift of “Argonautika’” the students reflect their imminent quest for the shining possibilities that lie in wait for them, like the fleece that Jason and his crew strove for, with the help of the gods. Along with the play, their high school career ends with a Main Lesson block called Symptomatology, taught by Joan Caldarera, in which seniors examine the symptoms of health and illness in the modern world. Symptomatology can be considered to be a phenomenological approach to understanding underlying conditions in world events, not only diseases of the times, but also defining characteristics. The students focus on what might be called meta-history, an overarching view of what history itself might mean. They look at at “signs of the times” during the last 110 years to try to determine the character of the 20th century and into the 21st, asking if there is a recognizable change in consciousness or a paradigm shift that can give us a clue to the direction of the future, and how they might help to shape it. The main reading for the course, Man’s Search for Meaning, is written by concentration camp survivor and psychiatrist Victor Frankl, who explores how focusing on the future, appreciating the barest hints of beauty in nature or artistic pursuits, and holding the image of love can help people withstand even the most dehumanizing conditions. Photo Credit: Daniel Dreilinger specialty teacher for each subject. But each class has a three faculty Class Sponsors who guide the class and keep watch over the social health of the students. These senior sponsors, John Burket, Caroline Alba, and Cynthia Renegar, know the students and the parents well, working to provide bridges within the community. “One of the amazing things about working with the seniors is seeing their individualities emerge and begin to shine over the course of the senior year,” notes Dr. Burket, biology teacher and class sponsor. “It never ceases to impress me. We saw it in the Senior Project presentations, and we teachers see it happening in the classroom as well.” The eighth graders return from their trip and ready themselves for the final ceremony of their grade school years, a celebration as they are graduated to high school. Faculty and families gather to recognize the class for their creativity, academic and athletic accomplishments, and strong sense of community. They have served as role models to the younger students throughout the year, and their individuality and enthusiasm will be missed on the Washington Street campus. The senior year curriculum guides students to understand the tension between individualism and global consciousness. The students explore questions of morality in Goethe’s Faust, study the utopian visions of Thoreau and the American Transcendentalists, and assess the economic and environmental challenges of our time. Seniors have developed the capacity to synthesize what they learn as they begin to envision their emerging place in the world. SFWHS teachers and staff will welcome many of these students to the high school in the fall, and the whole school welcomes each and every student and family into the grade school alumni community. We send best wishes to all eighth graders as they head to diverse and esteemed high schools around our city. Like the eighth graders, the seniors follow their theatrical work with a final trip, this year to the Havasupai Indian Reservation near the Grand Canyon. The group debarks from the a long ride on the Green Tortoise Bus and hikes eight miles to reach the small town of Supai, the most remote town in the continental U.S. They make camp surrounded by some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. And to the senior Class of 2015, now also part of the school’s expanding and enthusiastic alumni community, the school offers special congratulations and sincere gratitude. The class has ably led the high school student body and each student has shown a unique and independent spirit. This is a creative, diverse, and talented group who, notes College Counselor Lauren Rudsten, have thought deeply about their plans for the future. Those plans include physics and filmmaking, literature and language study, pre-med and education. They will play music and sports and act in in theater productions. Many, of course, are undecided in their major field of study and excited to explore academic interests at small liberal arts colleges, medium-sized colleges, and large research universities, both in the United States and abroad. In addition to the creativity of the play and the grandeur of the senior trip, there is meaning in more modest school traditions such as the “walk through the grades,” when the seniors visit the grade school classrooms to reflect on their own schooling while being bidden farewell by the children. There is an important moment when the soon-to-begraduates sit in the circle of the full N-12 faculty to offer insight into their experience at SFWS. This meeting is followed by the senior-faculty dinner, an evening of conversation, critiques, remembrances, and hopes for the future. As one beaming senior noted, “We talked together like adults, about the school, the world, and our future.” We are proud of all of our graduates, from 8th and 12th grade alike, and look forward to hearing about the achievements of each one in the future. The teachers, as always, strive to support students at their place in development. Unlike the grade school with its Class Teacher model, San Francisco Waldorf High School operates in many ways likes other high schools; students move from classroom to locker to classroom, with a 3 Alumni Corner Engaging our Community with Lea Bushnell (SFWS 2011), Alumni Association Chair I always need to be planning something. Now that planning is, “What am I going to do after school?” that honored our unique experiences and individuality. With my role in the Alumni Association I hope to be able to bring people together and help alumni find a space to continue in the community, even if our lives take us in different directions. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the community that held us for so many years, as we continue to grow as individuals. And it’s a chance to reconnect and give back to the school. For instance, we recently started the Alumni Giving Race, a way for alumni to help fund a program with an important personal connection — like theater or athletics — while supporting today’s students. This year, I graduated from Connecticut College in New London, with degrees in economics and art. I also served as captain of the varsity sailing team and sailed in the 2013 Women’s National Championships and the 2014 Coed National Championships. At college, I met so many new people and made amazing friends. I have become part of the Connecticut College community and love everything it has brought to my life — academics, sailing, friendships, and personal growth. As I look forward to my future, I always seem to return to planning. From planning the fundraising initiatives for our Waldorf senior class trip, to planning the events for my sailing team, I know that I want continue this work. San Francisco Waldorf School has given me the opportunity to enhance my skills in fundraising and events, continuing to support my interests and passions. Even with all of these college experiences, I recognize that the Waldorf experience is unique. No matter what someone’s interests or aptitudes, the community encourages strong bonds to form, bonds that continue to grow long after graduation. When I was asked to be the Chair of the Alumni Association I was honored and excited to help grow the San Francisco Waldorf Alumni community. Waldorf is a part of so many lives, even after we leave. I’ve been away from the school for almost four years now and I still apply the lessons in my everyday life — moving easily between very different subjects, art and economics, for example. At a liberal arts college I take classes in numerous departments and each of these classes I can relate back to my Waldorf studies. I will always value the ways in which Waldorf taught us to learn and to be unafraid of looking into the world for new and exciting experiences. There aren’t many people who spent their lives at a Waldorf school, people who know what eurythmy is, have studied Norse myths, had woodwork and handwork, or put on a class play every year. We have each had these experiences and have grown from our classes and teachers. As I see myself growing and moving away from my own family I think about my family at Waldorf, and realize that no matter where we are in the world we have a connection with each other. In 2013 I started working with the Advancement Office to help plan the class reunions. Now I am able to help build a program for a school 4 San Francisco Waldorf School Alumni Program June marks the official launch of the San Francisco Waldorf School Alumni Association, establishing a formalized link between individual Class Liaisons and their former classmates while strengthening the school’s growing alumni network. The Association is run by the Advancement Office under the direction of Seraph White, and with the leadership of Association Chair Lea Bushnell (’11). Liaisons will provide ideas and support for events, build connections with former classmates and the school, and help build fundraising. The establishment of the Alumni Association is one part of a comprehensive alumni program that helps alumni maintain strong ties with each other, the school, and the principles of Waldorf education. The school hosts several special reunions: grade school, high school, and all-school events in which students and parents get reacquainted with their old friends. An annual winter alumni event at the high school draws alumni, parents, and teachers. We also hold a summer reunion for alumni only - this year’s reunion will be held at Smokestack at Magnolia Brewing Company. Special guests are the high school Class of 2005, celebrating their ten-year reunion. The alumni community is strong and growing; there are twenty-eight graduated grade school and fifteen graduated high school classes, for a total of nearly 1,000 alumni. Alumni stay in touch through the year on Facebook pages and at events. And the entire school community can read about the endeavors of alumni here in the monthly newsletter. The profiles of this diverse group – students, artists, doctors, entrepreneurs -- are always available on the school’s website Eurthymy is a gift that always helps me stay balanced. Thank you Ms. Thiersch! ~Chris Jensen, 2009 Alumni Association: Thank you to the following alumni serve as alumni class liaisons: Philippine Alba, 2014; Jackson Stewart, 2013; Andre Amarotico, Maude Molesworth, 2012; Pietro Carini, 2011; Allason Leitz, 2010; Andreas Bloom, 2009; Cody Fusco, 2008; Dilys Sun, 2006; Gabriel Goldthwaite, 2005; Lauren Cook 2002; Coeli Polansky, 2001; Bronwen David, 1996; Dorian “Jamal” Cool, 1995; Mayela Gutknecht, 1994. Reunions: The alumni program supports the involvement of alumni in a number of ways. The first is a robust set of annual reunions, each with different focuses. The first reunion, started in the summer of 2010, is just for alumni who are over the age of 18 and is typically held at a restaurant/bar somewhere in San Francisco. The second reunion, started in the winter of 2010 is for alumni over the age of 18 and their parents. We hold this reunion at our high school and usually see attendance of between 75 and 100 people. Since 2012 we have worked with AWSNA’s cosponsorship to engage Waldorf alumni from schools around the world who live in San Francisco. In addition to these two all alumni reunions, we have three smaller reunions to meet the individual needs of classes. We hold a 9th grade and 12th grade reunion for our grade school classes, allowing grade school alumni to return to their old campus. This allows us to reconnect with students who have attended other high schools, before they go to college, as well as help the students who are still at the high school to feel a sense of growth and maturity in relationship to their grade school days. We also occasionally hold a 25th reunion for our grade school classes, a tradition that started in 2012 with our founding class. We hope to strengthen this reunion in coming years. Monthly Newsletter Every month during the school year, SFWS publishes this newsletter, offering pedagogical articles and community information. A section of this newsletter is dedicated to alumni communications with updates, announcements, and upcoming events highlighted. The cornerstone of the alumni section is the alumni profile. We choose a variety of young people, having found that the Waldorf story is told best through individualized anecdotes of success. Interviewees include doctors, lawyers, artists, entrepreneurs, scientists, business people, and more. Interviews are posted on our website, on facebook, and in the alumni section of our annual report. In our fourth year of extensively collecting these profiles, we have noticed some commonalities between our alumni. All of them are individualistic, all of them are following their passions and dreams, all of them on the road to success in their chosen fields, and all of them value creative thinking. As Michael Bloom (‘01) said in his profile, “a lot of schools teach you to analyze, and many others teach creativity, but very few teach at the intersection of those two. It is this intersection of creative thinking that allows for success.” 5 Alumni Giving Race This year we made our first push toward alumni participation in our Annual Giving. Using our Alumni Liaisons network and social networking tools we more that doubled alumni gifts. We would like to offer particular appreciation to the Class of 2011 and the founding Grade School Class of 1988 for both reaching nearly 15% participation! The people who gave from each of these classes will recieve prizes at our reunion. Zhang Appreciation for Our Dedicated Parent Volunteers It was a full house at June Board meeting, the last of the school year and a special time to honor volunteer leaders for their contributions to our community. With their inspiration and the support of more than 600 individual parent volunteers, our school continues to thrive and grow. The Advancement Office acknowledged several special parent leaders, departing in their roles, who transformed these key programs: Juliana Beach helped raise $1.25 million over nine years as Spring Night Chair. Thanks to Julianna, each auction built on the fundraising and fun of the last (1920s theme night!), and brought the community together for an evening of great food, music, and merriment. When Charlie Spiegel became parent chair four years ago, Annual Fund became the 100% Parent Participation Fund and the school quickly reached its target of full family participation. Charlie retires his position as his daughter graduates, but left his mark with this program and throughout the school. Though she moved on a few years ago, Ellen Stephens’ efforts with the high school Parent Council is felt in the strength of that organization today. Finally, we would like to extend a huge thank you to our Advancement Liaisons, who have worked tirelessly over the past year to bring the school community to 99% participation (and nearing 100% quickly)! 6 Friends (up to $999) Anonymous (40) Deborah and Noor Adabachi Lisa-Marie Ahearne Kumi Akiyoshi and Kyu Che Caroline Alba Andrew Aldrich and John Kirkley Jeanann Almirol Stephanie Alston and Kelly Quirke Bryan Anderson Mary Anderson and Lance Harriman Erika and Arthur Andreas Heena and Rahul Asave In Memory of B.
