Introduction
Word Focus is a systematic approach to advanced vocabulary building. We provide you with
four effective techniques to help you understand and memorize important words and
meanings. The words have been selected to be suitable for students of high school age and
beyond. Our systems are particularly helpful for students preparing for standardized tests
such as the GRE or SAT examinations. The words you will learn are not just to get you through
a test – they should become part of your vocabulary for the rest of your life.
You can increase your vocabulary quickly with Word Focus – up to 1,000 relevant words in as
little as eight weeks! And you can test yourself as you go along using the specially designed
companion tests at www.majortests.com.
The Word Focus system consists of 95 cards that you can print out. The most important point
about Word Focus cards is that each card consists of one or more groups of words arranged to
help you learn. Note that there is a big difference between studying word lists and learning
groups of words as you will with our program.
Word focus cards are organized to take advantage of your brain’s special skills: pattern
recognition, multi-tasking and the power of association.

Each card has a set of words specially grouped to facilitate learning. Your brain
actually finds it harder to learn something in isolation; that is why our cards are
not like the run of the mill cards that have only one word per card.

You can learn one thousand high-level vocabulary words with the aid of the
cards. Used along with our vocabulary tests and the wordlists at majortests.com
you could learn hundreds more.

There are four different approaches so you don’t get bored: word associations,
synonym sets, word roots, and subject-related words.

How to use Word Focus
The 95 Word Focus cards are numbered and color-coded.
Cards A01 to A20 are ‘word associations’:
Word associations help you recognize a common phrase in which you often hear the
word. It is easier to memorize the phrase than to memorize a definition.
Cards B01 to B25 are ‘synonym sets’:
Synonym sets are groups of words with similar meanings. You learn several words at
the same time and by associating them as a group you recall them more readily.
Cards C01 to C30 are ‘word roots’:
Word roots are the words from Latin, Greek or other languages from which many
English words are derived. Your in-built pattern recognition skills will help you learn
sets of words derived from the same root.
Cards D01 to D20 are ‘subject-related words’:
Subject-related words help you to upgrade your knowledge of terms from an area of
study that might be unfamiliar to you – architecture, or law, for example.
We suggest that you start with one approach at a time. You can start with any of the series A,
B, C or D, but if you have no preference it would be a good idea to go in the order that we have
given. Instructions on how to go about each series are given at the beginning of each section.

Vocabulary Tests at majortests.com
It is not enough to simply read the cards. You must put your mind to the job of seeing the
connections between the words or making an association to something that you might have
heard or read. You also need to review the cards regularly. So, for example, if you study five
cards one evening, you should go over the same cards the next day and again about four or
five days later. You are trying, by constant repetition, to transfer the words from your short
term memory to your long term memory.
You should set yourself a time limit to learn each set of cards and take the relevant tests. You
could use the eight-week study plan we provide or make your own plan.
You will find that some words appear in more than one set of cards. This is a deliberate tactic –
the more times you meet a word, the more likely you are to remember it. If you are also
learning the word lists on www.majortests.com you will find further overlap that will help
reinforce your learning. Of course, if you are also reading challenging materials such as classic
novels or high-quality magazines on a regular basis, you will learn even faster as you will meet
many ‘word focus’ words in real life.

Each significant word (in red) is placed in a memorable phrase which appears in boldface. The
meaning of the phrase is made clear by the rest of the sentence which appears in parentheses.
By learning the phrase you learn a typical use of the word and have a context in which to place
the word. By reading the whole sentence you appreciate the meaning of the key word better.

Cards B01-B25 contain sets of synonyms.
Synonyms are words with similar meanings. For example, fleeting, transient, ephemeral and
evanescent are all adjectives used to describe something short-lived.
If you can learn many such groups of words with related meanings you speed up the wordlearning process. Associating a set of related words is like getting four or five words for the
‘price’ of one meaning!
The words fleeting, transient, ephemeral and evanescent are so similar in meaning that they
are almost interchangeable. But not all the words in each set of synonyms have identical
meanings – they are related but may be used in slightly different ways. For example, the
words abiding, eternal, perennial and durable all mean ‘long-lasting’, and although you would
describe some plastics as ‘durable’, you would not use any of the other words for that purpose.
You will learn these slightly different usages when you meet the words in your reading, and
the tests we have provided will also help you appreciate the different ways the words in the
synonym sets are used.
The words in each set are not necessarily the same part of speech: they can be adjectives,
verbs or nouns. To help you we have color-coded the words:

Cards C01-C30 contain groups of words derived from common roots.
The ‘root’ of a word in English is the original word from which the word has evolved. For
example, the word belligerent, which means ‘aggressive’, comes from the Latin word bellum
which means ‘war’. Once you know that fact, it becomes easier to learn that bellicose also
means ‘aggressive’.
Not all root words are equally helpful when it comes to learning words. We have selected
word roots that are readily identified and which can help you add important words to your
vocabulary.
Since you are not learning Latin, Greek or Anglo-Saxon, we have kept things simple and
haven’t identified the language of the root word. In some cases we have given common words
from the same root to help you remember the root. For example:
