ThisprogramwasthefirstNSFREUSiteprogramestablishedinWestAfricaandthesecondinSubSaharaAfrica.BegunatJMU,theprogramiscurrentlythelongestcontinuouslyrunningREUprogramin
Africa.Sofar,96studentshaveparticipatedinthisprogram.
BridgestotheBaccalaureateatJMU(July2002-August2006):TheNationalInstitutesforGeneral
MedicalSciences(NIGMS)fundedthisprogramthatsupportedresearchexperiencesatJMUfor36
under-representedstudentsfromtheBlueRidgeCommunityCollege(BRCC),NorthernVirginia
CommunityCollege(NVCC)andJaySergeantReynoldsCommunityCollege.About50%ofthestudents
transferredtoJMUand92%ofthemgraduatedwithinthreeyears.
UndergraduateMentoringinEnvironmentalBiologyatJMU(September2001-August2006):ThisNSFfundedprogramprovidedyear-roundmentoringbyJMUfacultymembersforunder-represented
