A Word From Our Pastor

May is the month of special “Days”
Dr. Mike Shaw
Senior Pastor
Sunday, May 5, is Senior Adult
Day. Years ago (when we first started
celebrating Senior Adult Day) we
would have Mrs. Myrtle Cummings
lead the singing and direct the Senior
Adult Choir. Mrs. Cummings had been
the “song director” at Pelham Baptist
Church in the 1940s and 1950s. After
Brother Sam Neugent became our
Worship leader, he and Mrs. Cummings
would sing a duet on the gospel song
“Never Grow Old”. Our Senior Adults
(and our entire church) are blessed to
have Dr. Paul Moore serving as our
Senior Adult Pastor. Paul and Barbara
are a great team as they lead our Senior
Adult group in missions, ministry,
fellowship, outreach, discipleship
and sightseeing. Mary and I had the
privilege of going to the Billy Graham
Library in Charlotte, N.C. with them
last year, and we were so blessed to
be a part of such a sweet fellowship.
Every Sunday is Senior Adult Sunday
for me now, and the rumor has it that
our Worship Leader is a candidate for
membership in AARP!
May 12 is Mother’s Day and our
mothers deserve more than just a day.
I hope that you will let your mother
know how much she means to you,
not just once a year, but every day. My
mother has been in heaven for over
20 years but her godly influence and
her prayers are still being answered in
my life. I plan on making a gift to the
Alabama Baptist Children’s Homes and
Family Ministries in her memory so
that her love for Christ will be shared
with boys and girls who need a touch
from God in this generation.
May 19 is Graduate Recognition
as we honor those who come to a major
intersection in the road of life. We will
acknowledge those who are graduating
from High School, College, or Graduate
School. We need to pray and encourage
them as they move to a new era in their
lives.
On May 26, we will remember those
who have given their lives for our freedom
as we observe Memorial Day. Someone
has said that “We will remain the Land of
the Free as long as we are the Home of the
Brave”. The Alabama Veteran’s Cemetery
in Montevallo and the Veteran’s monuments
on millions of graves across our nation
remind us that just as our spiritual freedom
came at the cost of our Savior’s life, our
political freedom came from our patriot’s
lives.
These special days will be observed in
May and we will not meet to glorify Senior
Adults, Mothers, Graduates, and even
Heroes, but to glorify the only one who is
Worthy, Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
I want to say a final word to my heroes,
the boys and girls who took part in the
Bible Drills this year. I am so thankful for
you and your family and to our Bible Drill
leaders. I salute you and thank God for you!
Don’t forget VBS is coming.
I love you, I love you, I love you.
God bless you and God bless America!
Bro. Mike
The Counselor’s Corner
Some years ago, I was involved in
a discussion about what it means to a
Christian who fully understands the fact
that the very Spirit that raised Christ
from the dead lives in them (Romans
8:11). My thought was that we would
see healings and miracles and we would
better know and understand the will of
God. Jesus said, “Whoever believes on
me will do the things I do, and more
than that, greater things will he do”
(John 14:12). Jesus says that we will see
more than healings and miracles. What
are the greater things that Jesus spoke
about?
The Spirit and Power of God within
us means that we can come boldly to
the throne of God (Hebrews 4:16).
It means that we can learn to be pleasers of God rather than pleasers of men
(Gal. 1:10). It means that we no longer
have to save our life by winning every
argument or battle or by getting the last
word in because he who saves his life
will lose it (Matt. 16:25). We can be
free of depression and anxiety because
God doesn’t give us a spirit of fear (2
Tim. 1:7). It means we can be overcomers of our problems because greater is
that spirit that is within us than the
one that is in the world (1 John 4:4).
We can be free of addictions of all kinds
because God will supply all our needs
according to his riches in glory (Phil.
4:19).
It means that we can reach our full
potential in Christ and live the abundant
life that He came to give. Jesus not only
died in order to get us to heaven, He
died to give us abundant life on this
earth (John 10:10). Now if His death
was to give you all those things … and
you only grasp that He died so that you
can go to heaven … what part of his suffering and death was in vain for you? —Linda Story

Dear Church Family,
Thank you for the beautiful flowers and all of your
prayers. During our time of sorrow we learn how much
our friends mean to us. Your kindness and sympathy will
always be remembered by the family of Harold Edward
Roberts.
Dear Church Family,
Thank you for all the cards, calls, prayers and hugs
you gave me in memory of my brother James Glaze.
Without this church and God’s blessings I would be lost.
Love to you all,
Sandy & Jim Porter
It’s because of your kind donations and partnership
in this ministry that we are able to help those in need and
share the love of Christ with them. Thank you for your
support of The Jimmie Hale Mission.
