Lesson 2 Sentence Write this sentence on the board: There are ______ letters in my name. SAY: Write this sentence: There are ______ letters in my name. Write the word for the number of letters. Lesson 3 Calendar Display a calendar for students. Have each student pick one day and write it with the ordinal number, such as Tuesday, September 12th. SAY: Look at the calendar. Pick one day and write the day of the week and the number for the day of the month. Lesson 4 Sentence Have students pick one month and write about something they do in that month. For example, they could write: In September, I play soccer. SAY: Write a sentence about a month. Tell one thing you do in that month. Lesson 5 Description Have students identify the colors of their clothes. Draw a stick figure on the board and label “shirt” and “pants.” Have each student write: I have a _____ shirt. I have _____ pants. SAY: What color is your shirt? What color are your pants? Write these sentences: I have a _____ shirt. I have _____ pants. Ask partners to exchange papers. Have each student write the names of the shapes. SAY: Draw three shapes on a sheet of paper. Exchange papers with your partner. Write the words for each shape. Lesson 7 Directions Have students draw a map or diagram of the classroom. Help them by writing label words on the board, such as bookshelves, table, desk, chair, or window. Ask them to write directions from the classroom door to one place in the room. SAY: Choose one place in the room. Write directions from the door to this place. Lesson 8 List Have students list the objects on their desks, such as pencils, paper, and books. Then have them answer this question: What is on the desk? SAY: Look at objects on your desk. Write the question: What is on the desk? Then answer the question. Lesson 9 Description Have students name an animal they like and tell one thing they know about this animal. SAY: Write about an animal you like. Tell one thing you know about this animal. Lesson 10 Folktale Ask students to think of a folktale or story that they know. Have them name the main character and tell where and when the story is set. SAY: Think of a story you know. Write the name of the main character. Tell where the story takes place and when it happens. Lesson 11 Brainstorm Have students make a list of things in nature that they could write about in a folktale, such as why moths fly to light. SAY: List five things in nature that you could write about in a folktale. Write on the board: ______ is north of the United States. _______ is south of the United States. SAY: Look at the map on page 18. Complete these sentences about our neighboring countries: ______ is north of the United States. _______ is south of the United States. Lesson 13 Directions Provide students with a map of the school’s neighborhood. Have students write about one place that is in each direction from the school. For example: The post office is west of our school. SAY: Look at the map. Write a sentence telling what place is north of the school. Write three more sentences telling what is east, south, and west of the school. Lesson 14 Adverbs Have students write sentences telling what they do before school and what they do after school. SAY: What do you do before you come to school? What do you do after school? Lesson 15 Science Ask students what happens to ice cubes in a glass of water. Ask them what happens to the water. [Note: the ice begins to melt and the water gets cooler.] Have them write sentences responding to these questions. SAY: What happens to ice cubes in a glass of water? What happens to the water? Lesson 16 Diagram Ask students to look at the diagram on page 23 of the Student Book. Have them draw a diagram that shows three types of bodies of water and label each one. SAY: Draw a diagram showing three types of bodies of water. Label each one. Lesson 17 Diagram Have students draw a diagram showing a food chain. Ask them to include at least one producer, consumer, and decomposer. SAY: Draw a diagram showing a food chain. Include at least one producer, consumer, and decomposer. Have each student draw a rectangle, square, or circle with a fraction colored in. Students can trade papers and write the words for the fraction, decimal, and percentage. SAY: Work with a partner. Draw a rectangle, square, or circle with a fraction colored in. Exchange papers. Write the words for the fraction, decimal, and percentage shown in your partner’s drawing. Lesson 20 Health Have students write about their favorite physical activity. Ask them to tell why they like to do this activity. SAY: Write about your favorite physical activity. Tell why you like doing this. Lesson 21 Description Have students describe a healthy meal they eat at home. They can list the dishes or write sentences. SAY: Describe a healthy meal you eat at home.
