Prerequisite: Math 20 Elementary Algebra, or equivalent, with a grade of “C” or better. Textbook: Angel and Runde, Intermediate Algebra for College Students,9th ed., with a MyMathLab student access code, Pearson, 2015. Math Lab: You are eligible to use the Math Lab, located in Room 807, by enrolling in Math N01F, a zero-unit, free-tutoring course. The enrollment to the Math Lab is optional but strongly encouraged. The lab offers one-on-one tutoring, computer software, DVD tutorials and a variety of other resources. For more information, please click http://math.fullcoll.edu/mathlab.html Withdrawal: If you miss either the first class meeting or the first online homework, you will be dropped from the course as NO SHOW. Also, if you miss TWO online assignments, TWO class meetings, or a combination of ONE class meeting and ONE online assignment in total, then you may be DROPPED at my discretion. Because we meet only once a week, it is important that you come to class on time and stay focused. So, tardy or leaving the classroom before dismissal will count as a half-day absence and also you may not be allowed to take a quiz. Please email me if you are going to miss either an online assignment or a class meeting. It is your RESPONSIBILITY to drop officially if you need to. This hybrid course is not self-paced and it requires a strong commitment and selfmotivation. Because we meet only once a week on Fridays, you are expected to learn the material on your own by reading the textbook, viewing online video lectures, practicing online exercises, and submitting homework assignments online. It is extremely important that you READ and WORK on the assigned reading sections and problems well before you come to the class. Friday meetings will be used mostly to 1. answer your questions, 2. go over and grade weekly worksheets, 3. take quizzes, and 4. briefly discuss some important, but not all, topics and concepts from lecture notes. Should you have any technical, connection or other computer problems, it is your responsibility to get the problems fixed in a timely manner by contacting the MyMathLab Technical support hotline at 800-677-6337 and no such excuses will be accepted. To be registered officially in the course, 1. You must first be registered for Math 40, CRN 14495, at Fullerton College. 2. Then, go to the website: http://pearsonmylabandmastering.com and register as a student with below information: a. Your valid email address, b. Course ID, which is cho85685, and c. Student Access Code (The access code can be found from a new textbook bundle, if bought at FC bookstore or can be purchased online while registering). Online Announcements: Announcements will be posted throughout the semester for any changes in the course syllabus or schedule. You are required to check them on a weekly basis and you are responsible for any changes posted online, such as change of exam dates. Grading Policy: 15 14 9 1 1 Online Homework Weekly worksheets On-campus Quizzes On-campus Midterm On-campus Final Exam Maximum Total Score 75 points 42 points 90 points 100 points 100 points 417 points Grading Scale: Your final grade in the course will be based on your total score. A = 360 – 417 D = 240 – 279 B = 320 – 359 F = below 240 C = 280 – 319 Semester Grade/No Makeups: Please note that the website’s grades are based on unweighted percentages while this class’s final grade will be based on points, which means there may be some discrepancy on your course grade from the website. For accurate points or grade, check with me any time. Also note that there are absolutely no makeups for anything. Weekly Lecture Notes and Worksheets: Lecture notes highlighting some important topics along with worksheets will be given a week in advance. Please note that these lecture notes and worksheets cannot possibly replace all the material that you are responsible for this course. Each worksheet needs to be completed before the next class meeting. Each worksheet turned on-time with 70% or above score will earn 3 points; less than 70%, not graded, not present or turned one-week late will earn 1 point; otherwise, no point. Online Homework: Weekly homework problems are assigned once a week and are due online by Monday 10 pm. Homework questions are mostly selected from the exercise sets of the sections that are scheduled to be covered each week. No late homework is accepted. On-campus Quizzes: A weekly quiz will be given at the beginning of each Friday class and therefore, if you are late to the class, then you cannot take it. On-campus Exams: There is one on-campus midterm exam, covering chapters 2 through 7, on Friday, 10/28/2016. The on-campus comprehensive final exam will be given on Friday, 12/9/2016. Since there are no makeups for anything in this class, you are responsible to make any prearrangement, should you foresee a time conflict. There is no makeup exam and failure to take the final exam will result in a course grade of “F”. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion, you should be able to: 1) Identify an equation as linear, quadratic, radical, rational, exponential, or logarithmic, and solve the equation using an appropriate method. 2) Produce the completely factored form of a polynomial. 3) Perform operations on and simplify polynomials, rational expressions, radical expressions, logarithmic expressions, or exponential expressions at an intermediate level. 4) Evaluate a function with a numerical or variable argument, and produce the graph of the function by plotting points.
