Human Rights Day 2015 – Two events in New York

Theme – This year Human Rights Day highlights 'Freedoms,' recalling the four freedoms that underlie the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights and two major human rights covenants.
Figures – In his “four freedoms speech” in 1941 President Franklin D. Roosevelt's offered a vision. His wife,
Eleonore was instrumental in helping that vision finds its way in human rights treaties. Both were
instrumental in the creation of the United Nations, 70 years ago.
Guests – The UN Deputy Secretary-General, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, New
York City’s officials, Permanent Representatives to the UN, civil society representatives, students.
Panel discussion on Human Rights up Front
UNHQ, ECOSOC Chamber, 9 December 2015, 3pm-5pm
Objective – Show Human Rights up Front’s transformative potential at a time of extraordinary challenges
Speakers – UN Deputy Secretary-General; President of the UN General Assembly (tbc).
