pool company to take care of the pools and spas.
Speaking on behalf of the board and myself, we
feel that we have hired a company that can
adequately take care of our pools in the manner
that they should be. You should be seeing a
positive improvement in both pools and spas in
the coming days.
The repairing of the pool fencing is also being addressed, in an
ongoing situation where certain individuals have been
breaking and bending the fencing in order to obtain entrance
to the pools.
If anyone sees individuals damaging our property, please
contact Daniel Castillo at Cadden Management, myself, or any
other board members. Thank you.

Desert
Mistletoe
Desert mistletoe, friend or foe? Like many things, it is all a matter of perspective. If, for
example, you are a phainopepla, or silky flycatcher, mistletoe is a favored plant as a major food source.
If, however, you are a leguminous tree such as Mesquite, Palo Verde, or Ironwood, or a homeowner
with such trees in your yard, you might not be so enamored with the plant.
Desert mistletoe is a parasitic plant, found wherever suitable host trees occur, and is common
in the Sonoran Desert in which we live. It grows in dense clusters of brittle stems. The leaves have
been reduced to scales. Green stems contain chlorophyll and are capable of photosynthesis, but as a
parasite mistletoe takes water and nutrients from the host plant. Very small greenish-yellow flowers
appear generally from January through March. Plants are monecious (meaning “one house”), with
male and female flowers present on separate plants. Female flowers produce berries that ripen to a
yellow-salmon color and contain several sticky red seeds in a gelatinous pulp.
Plants are spread when the sticky seeds are deposited on host plants. Many species of birds
feed on the berries, then transport them to other plants where they are deposited when bills are wiped
on branches or feet make contact. Seeds can also be spread through droppings. Phainopeplas, also
known as silky flycatchers, are the primary vectors of the seeds, which are a primary food source in
winter when insects are scarce.
Mistletoe spends the first several years in a host sending roots into the tree, then vegetative
growth develops. By the time it becomes evident, it likely has been there a while.
The jury is out on whether or not desert mistletoe kills trees. Generally, it is bad juju for a
parasite to kill its host. However, if many large clumps become established on a single tree, evidence
suggests the host may succumb. The best bet is prevention, which is maintaining trees in healthy
condition and mitigating the effects of drought.
If you have an infestation of desert mistletoe, discuss current eradication or maintenance
options with your arborist.

Lost and Found Pets:
A recent incident of a lost pet has got me thinking
yet again on the importance of getting your pet
microchipped. Dogs, cats, and various other furred
creatures can be chipped.
Microchips are as small as a grain of rice, are
inserted just under the skin in the shoulder area
and once registered, will provide ultimate proof that
the pet belongs to YOU.
Local pet clinics, the shelters and pet store mobile
vaccine clinics will microchip your pet for a nominal
fee. And really, isn’t it worth it for peace of mind?
Your pet gets out, someone finds it and has it
scanned, the chip company will contact you after
they are called and will get everyone in contact with
each other. Really, it is just as simple as that.
If you opt out of getting your pet chipped, then
please consider a collar and ID tag with the pet’s
name and your phone number. Speedy return of
your pet is everyone’s goal.
If you find a pet, be sure to contact me so I can get
a blast out right away! [email protected]
