An example of learning under 2’s
An element of any of the seven areas of learning can be found in most activities. They may not be to
exist in the same magnitude but we generally can enrich a single topic to allow children to explore all
seven areas of learning and development for example, using treasure baskets during our topic of
‘Let’s explore my senses’.
Physical Development
Personal, Social and Emotional
By reaching out for items, touching and
holding them children and young
babies are developing both their
smaller and larger muscles also known
as fine and gross motor skills which is
part of their physical development.
Through this exploratory play between
practitioner and children, bonds are
strengthened, allowing children to
build confidence and enjoyment in play
and sharing, these increases their
personal, social and emotional
development.
Communication and Language
Children are encouraged to explore a
variety of textures and practitioners
will be talking to the children about the
different feels and encourage them to
offer babbling in return, increasing
their communication and language
skills,
Literacy
Let’s Explore my Senses
Understanding the World
By incorporating familiar objects into
the treasure baskets such as a brush or
a pinecone, children are able to
recognise things from other
environments showing their
developing understanding of the
world.
The treasure basket will contain items
that can be used for mark making or
indeed a fabric book to allow the
babies to be read to and feel at the
same time
Expressive Arts and Design
The world of pretence is vital in
expressive arts and a treasure basket
provides huge opportunities.
Mathematics
Children will develop mathematical
skills by having different numbers of
items in the treasure so they can count
also objects that advance the ideas of
shapes, measures- bigger or smaller.
