b. Make a prediction: Tim left the egg on the edge of the counter. The egg will roll of the counter
and break.

color, what lunch
d. List the other 3 skills not mentioned above. Observation , evaluating, and making models
Use the following text to help answer 2 & 4
Mr. Smith is an architect. He lives next to the transform boundary in California. He is trying to build a
structure that will outlast the earthquakes. He decides to place a miniature building on an earthquake stand to
observe the effects of a simulated earthquake. However, before conducting his experiment, Mr. Jones
gathered outside information on building structures and materials.
2. Other than the skill mention, what skill is illustrated with the miniature house and earthquake
simulator?
Making a model
3. What is the independent and dependent variable in this experiment?
a. Independent: the house structures
b. Dependent: what building material is best for earthquakes
4. Why is doing research on outside information the first step in the scientific process?
Scientist need to do outside research to improve their experiments. Also to make sure to not
unintentionally redo an experiment conducted by other scientist.

Polish scientists were experimenting on a new drug to aid individuals that have stomach ulcers. The scientists
created a new medicine that was supposed to kill the bacteria in the stomach as well as at the same time heal
the damaged stomach cells. Once the medicine was created it was administered to test animals. After the test
animal trials proved to be a success, the scientist decided to move onto human trials. The medicine was
working during the first part of the experimental trial but the drug was not having the effect on humans as the
test subjects. The scientist determined the difference was because of multitude of foods humans eat
compared to the test animals. Even though their experiment did not prove the drug to be the miracle drug
they had hoped for, the scientist published their findings to the community.
5. What is the independent and dependent variable in this experiment?
a. Independent: medicine
b. Dependent: if the medicine was successful
6. Was the failure of the new drug a flaw in the experiment or an outside variable that could not be
controlled? Explain.
No it was not a flaw in the experiment because the diets of humans are diverse and that cannot be
controlled when not in a lab.
7. Dana is reading about the best conditions for worm composting. Worm composting involves keeping
worms in a bin with vegetable scraps from the kitchen along with other plant waste, and using the soil
and drippings they produce to improve gardens.
a. She should test the variables all at once in three different bins with the same amount of worms.
b. She should test the variables one at a time by keeping two of the variables constant and
testing the third.
c. She should test the variables at the same time by keeping one of them constant and testing the
other two.
d. She should test a different variable in the same bin over the course of a week, allowing two
days for each variable.

9. Using a new computer modeling technique, astronomers predict the location of a massive black hole at
the center of a distant galaxy. In this example, how is technology helpful to the astronomers?
a. It helps them discard inaccurate data and improve their hypothesis.
b. It makes it easy for them to develop new experiments and collect data.

12. In the early 1900s, a scientist named Alfred Wegener proposed the idea that all the continents were
once joined together into one supercontinent, which he called Pangaea. At first, this theory was

people to accept the theory that the continents were once all connected?
a. A lot of scientific evidence was found that supported this theory.
