Consider the following facts from the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies: FACT: The arts return $22.3 billion in revenue to federal, state, county, and municipal governments. A strong arts sector makes it easier for our government to balance its books. FACT: The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) receives a mere 0.004% of the total federal budget, less than 1/2 of one hundredth of one percent. Appropriations to state arts agencies constitute just 0.04% of state general funds expenditures, less than one half of one tenth of one percent. Arts cuts will harm communities without achieving real savings. FACT: Government arts support ensures that rural communities and low-income groups get their fair share of the educational and economic benefits offered by the arts. 40% of NEA-supported activities take place in high-poverty neighborhoods. While 15% of the U.S. population lives in rural areas, more than 25% of all state arts agency grants go to these communities. FACT: Funding from state arts agencies composes only 2.1% of total grantee revenue, however, these small investments pack a big punch: arts organizations use public dollars to generate earned income, secure private contributions, and leverage local matching funds. Every $1 of NEA support leverages $9 in matching funds. If not, please consider becoming one. Your support means more than ever now. Add your voice. Tell us how the arts impact your life and we will forward your comments to our state art council and our legislators. Send comments to my email at [email protected]. “The arts are gaining momentum across the Upper Peninsula as an important part of our economic vitality. Our biggest fear is that funding for the arts will be discontinued at the federal level. If that should happen, the impact from that bad decision will affect our state budget leaving Michigan behind in economic recovery once again.” - Dotty LaJoye, Executive Director Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development “Here in the Upper Peninsula, not only are we proud of the Bonifas Art Center, we rely on it. The arts nourish and inspire us; they help us to weave meaning into everyday life Exhibits, plays, classes and concerts offer us essential opportunities to create, to contemplate and to express ourselves – to come together as a community through shared experience. As a community, we need to raise our voice now and say that it is unacceptable to eliminate funding for the arts and humanities. Through facts, stories, phone calls or tweets (whatever it takes!) let’s send the message that we need arts in the U.P.” - Carolyn Stacey, Director of Escanaba Public Library “The loss of such entities as the NEA, NEH and PBS will be devastating to our future generations. Man cannot live by bread alone. Our souls deserve to appreciate a melody, a painting or sculpture or mind expanding literature and soar to greater heights.” -Nancy Beck, Community Action Agency Volunteer “As an advocate for children and adults, I value the Bonifas Art Center and all that they do for our community. I find their programs especially like, summertime music in the park, welcoming and inclusive of all. I especially appreciate the Art Center arranging for special classes for Our Kiwanis AKtion Club and for the Learning Center students.” - Dorothy J. Kollmann, Escanaba Noon Kiwanis New Faces at the Bonifas Irina Bruno: Educational Coordinator Irina, a native of Russia, moved to this area over 14 years ago. She has a background in international business and is also a local real estate agent. Irina wants to bring the arts and arts education to our community— focusing on the elderly and youth.
