1. Linda B. introduced our guest presenters, Deborah Petersen-Perlman,
Director of UMD Equal Opportunity Office and James Morales, Director of
the Equity Education and Services Office.
James told us that he had recently completed
a brochure about the Equity Education Office that lists resources
and topics he feels need to be addressed such as: Sexual
harassment, diversity, and equal opportunity.
He said that the purpose of
his department is to provide education and training about such topics
along with providing referrals and resources. He also stated that
another purpose of his office is to be a partner in education with
organizations such as the CW. His office is 119 Library and his E-mail
address is equityes.
Deborah told us that the proactive part of her job is supervising
search committees to help them obtain the best/widest possible candidate
list and that she also does search committee training.
She also
investigates complaints due to sexual harrassment or those that violate
state codes such as: issues of gender, race, sexuality, etc. She told us
about our obligations regarding the duty to report this type of complaint
to her. She said any incident that is a) on campus or a university
sponsored event, or b)involves campus personnel, must be
reported. Only licensed counselors are allowed to grant confidentiality
to those who talk with them about such incidents.
She said that we
should let the person talking with us know right away that we will be
required to report the offense. She recommended that we make referrals
to Shirley Reierson of Health Services for students who need or want
confidential counseling.
She said that no time limit in regards<••to
reportable events has been established. She stated
that if a court determines that an institution knew or should have known
about this type of incident, they are held liable. Deborah told us that
her department will be sponsoring workshops about homophobia in the near future
Deborah and James acknowledged the good work that is done by the Equity
Programs, WRAC and others in serving as advocates for those who have been
victims, but both acknowledged that more needs to be done to train and
identify advocates, so victims know who to go to for assistance.
2. Penny M. reported for the Grants and Budget Committee.
They have received 7 new grant requests to date.
a)
The first grant request was submitted by the
Hispanic/Chicano/Latino Services.
The request was for $200 for the Latin
America through Film Festival project.
The committee recommended we

this motion and it was unanimously approved.
b)
The second grant request was received from Cary Scheiderer for
$710 for a panel for Women in Engineering and Science to be held Spring

Cary that they also apply to the CSE and mentoring program for some of the
funds.
Carol T. seconded this motion and it was unanimously approved.
c)
The third grant request was received from Megan Petra from the
WRAC for $300 for partial support of speaker Christine Grant for a January
30, 1997 presentation.
