“As a principal with very high expectations of my staff, I
have consistently been pleased with the quality of student
that is produced by Belmont’s Department of Education.
Their student teachers are always well-prepared, willing to
learn and grow and often provide new ideas to my own
teaching staff. Belmont’s program attracts – and trains –
high-caliber teaching candidates that will be an asset in
the classroom immediately.”

Building Together for
Excellence in Education
The Education Minor
Some students are interested in education but do not want
to teach. These students choose to complete the 18 hour
minor only and do not pursue the 5th year internship.
The education minor is perfect for students who do not
want to teach but want a strong background in education.
Some career options for an education minor incude social
work, counseling, law and nonprofit organizations.
Are you interested in the field of teaching? Are you interested
in learning more about education? The Department of
Education at Belmont University has a variety of programs
to meet a variety of student interests.
WHY TEACH?
The demand is there!
We believe teaching can be the most rewarding career for
individuals with a passion for learning and a desire to make
a difference in the lives of children and youth. The demand
is also there. The U.S. Department of Education projects that
the need for new teachers in public and private schools will
continue to increase. Belmont graduates are highly sought
after by schools that recognize the caliber of our program and
our prepared, confident graduates.
WHAT MAKES
BELMONT’S
PROGRAM
UNIQUE?
Belmont’s approach to education
mirrors our approach to teaching.
We believe the most successful
teacher preparation programs combine
academics with hands-on experience.
Our nationally-accredited program
combines small class sizes with flexible
schedules. All classes are taught by doctoral-level faculty
with many years of teaching experience. Every student’s core
program integrates more than 100 hours of time in community
classrooms with additional hands-on experiences integrated
within the methods level courses.
Belmont’s “One-year Guarantee”
Program Overviews and Areas of Licensure
After completing the core classes, undergraduates can
choose from two routes to complete their program: (1) the
undergraduate double major program or (2) the education
minor with the 4+1 intern program.
Belmont offers licensure in PreK-3, K-6, 4-8, 7-12 (content
area), 9-12 (Sociology, Psychology), and K-12 (Art, Health/
PE, Theatre, Music). Teacher candidates also have the
opportunity to build a program that includes multiple
licensure areas.
Undergraduate Double Major
On this path, students complete a major in an academic content
area (e.g., math, English, psychology) as well as an education
major. Belmont teacher candidates achieve licensure in their
chosen area, and their program culminates in a semester of
student teaching in two different school placements.
The 4+1 Intern Program
Many students opt to pursue our 4+1 program, the fastest
path to achieving a Master of Art in Teaching degree. In this
program, undergraduate students complete an academic
major and the 18 hour education minor, returning to Belmont
for the 5th year graduate intern program. As an intern, our
students work in classrooms with a mentor teacher for a full
year resulting in licensure and a Master of Art in Teaching
degree. With the one year internship, our graduates are
officially considered second year teachers when they enter
the teaching profession, gaining a higher entry level salary.
The Department of Education understands the challenges
for a first year teacher. We believe excellent preparation
and careful guidance and mentoring can make that
first year a great one. To support our graduates as they
transition from Belmont to the teaching profession,
Belmont’s Department of Education offers a “one-year
guarantee.” Education faculty will provide personal
assistance as needed in middle Tennessee classrooms
for our graduates in their first year of teaching.
