Wichita falls ISD Topic 13 Fifth Grade Math Topic 13: Perimeter, Area, and Volume Lessons: 13.1 – 13.9 • • • • • • • Time Frame: 11 Days Revised TEKS Check- Before the Chapter Reteach/review GAP Alerts from last school year. Use models to determine formulas for perimeter and area of a rectangle. Solve problems related to perimeter and area of rectangles. Objectives Skills: The student will be able to… Use concrete objects and pictorial models to develop the formulas for the volume of a rectangular prism, including the special form for a cube (V= l x w x h, V= s x s x s, and V= Bh) (5.4G) Represent and solve problems related to perimeter and/or area and related to volume. (5.4H) Recognize… the volume of a three-dimensional figure as the number of unit cubes needed to fill it with no gaps or overlaps if possible. (5.6A) Determine the volume of a rectangular prism with whole number side lengths. (5.6B) Analyze mathematical relationships to connect and communicate mathematical ideas. (5.1F) TEKS 4.5C, 4.5D TEKS Readiness: 5.4H Supporting: 5.6A , 5.6B Process Skills: 5.1F Not Assessed: 5.4G ELPS: Performance Indicators: By the end of the lesson the student will be able to… • Use objects and pictorial models to develop formulas to calculate volume including volume for threedimensional figures, such as rectangular prisms and cubes. • Find the perimeter of a polygon using addition and/or multiplication. • Calculate the area of polygons using formulas. • Find the area of composite shapes by using a combination of the areas of squares or rectangles that make up the composite figure. • Solve real-world problems using the perimeter and area formulas of a rectangle or square, and by using the relationship between the formulas and a figure’s dimensions. • Use the volumes of pieces of a composite solid in order to find the total volume of the solid. • Solve problems by breaking apart the original problem into simpler ones, and using those solutions to solve the original problem. Students will need to find the perimeter and area as it relates to volume. Students need to understand that “B” stands for area of the base when finding volume. Also, students may be given the volume of a rectangular prism and be expected to divide it by the height in order to determine the area of the base. From there, they will need to determine the arrays that can be derived from the area of the Base in order to determine possible perimeters. **Teachers can get a free membership to Teachers Pay Teachers in order to download TPT Resources** Misconceptions/Underdeveloped Concepts • • • Students may confuse perimeter and area. Point out that the word “perimeter” contains the word “rim”, which refers to the edge of something. Students may think that there is only one way to separate the figure into two rectangles. Some students may think that volume can only be measured in cubic feet or cubic inches.
