Castleberry Independent School District Summer School 2010 School Bus Rider’s Safety Handbook Dear Parent, The Castleberry Independent School District provides bus transportation to and from school as a courtesy for eligible students residing in the district. The State of Texas prescribes the conditions governing school bus operations and funds the service by allotting the district a given amount for eligible students transported. Eligible students are defined by state statue as those residing in the district at least two miles from the school they attend, as measured by the nearest practical route. The nearest practical route is the nearest traveled public road which may or may not be the road used by the school bus. CISD will pick up and drop off all eligible students at designated areas around the district. Buses will not stop at any other locations outside of CISD boundaries. In order to meet the conditions outlined by the state and provide safe, prompt movement of eligible students, the school district has adopted standard regulations and procedures and has provided restrictive measures for violations of the rules. They are herein outlined for your information and for the guidance of your child. The school district is pleased to provide transportation for its eligible students and solicits your assistance in helping create a safe, healthy operation. You may do so by reading the enclosed material and acknowledge receipt by completing and returning the attached form to the campus principal. We ask for your cooperation with school personnel in developing safe behavior patterns for those pupils who ride the bus. If you should need information concerning bus routes, call the transportation office at 817-252-2053 or 817-252-2052. If you should need information concerning student misconduct on buses, you should call the student’s school principal. Thank you, Gary Jones Superintendent of Schools Brian Franks Director of Auxiliary Services Discipline The school bus is an extension of the classroom and discipline will be administered by the principal with assistance from the bus driver. All school board policies that apply to student conduct and other student related activities apply to the school bus. Steps and consequences for improper conduct on the school bus including the following: 1st bus referral: Conference with principal 2nd bus referral: Removal from bus for remainder of summer school A parent conference may be called at any time by the building administrator, transportation supervisor, or bus driver should misconduct occur. The building administrator has the discretion to skip discipline consequences for serious violations, or to repeat steps if the misconduct is not a serious safety violation. Bus Rider’s Safety Handbook Parents and Bus Riders The goal of the Bus Rider’s Handbook is to help provide a safe and enjoyable experience for children and adults who ride school buses. Parents should take time to read and discuss the materials in this handbook with their children. Riding a school bus is a privilege provided by the school district and should be treated as such. Your attendance at one of our district meetings is required. Student information cards are to be completed and turned in to the campus principal on or before 6/3/10. Anyone who does not complete the enrollment packet and return if before the deadline will not be able to ride the bus until all the necessary documents are submitted. If the application is received after the deadline, parents will be contacted to confirm the exact date transportation services will begin. All Middle School Students in grades 6-8 will be released from the bus first at each bus stop. After all Middle School students have exited the bus, Elementary Students will be released one at a time to their parent or legal guardian. Parents of students in grades PK-5 must pick their students from the bus stop every single day. Parents, or a person they designated on their enrollment form, will sign for their sons/daughters every single day with the designated bus monitor. If a parent or other designee is not there to sign for their child at their assigned bus stop, that student will be taken back to A.V. Cato. Parents will be called and the parent must pick them up from the school. If the parent does not sign for their child a second time, bus transportation will be revoked.
