Soil Temperature before seeding 2015 crops
Soil temperature varies everyday
as we are heading for spring and
the 2015 crop season.
time of seeding as well as when to
go for pre-seed burn off.
Yesterday, I measured soil temperature in wheat stubble as well
as in pea stubble fields during the
morning hours.
For Wheat crop to germinate, normal soil temperature should stay
above 5 degrees Celsius for few
days before farmers should begin
seeding.
I recorded soil temperature at one
inch depth during 8:15 am to 9:15
am, 4 miles North of Shaunavon ,
SK.
The same thing applies to Canola
and Mustard crops-optimum soil
temperature should be around 7
degrees Celsius for few days.
Temperature was showing a reading of around 6 degrees Celsius on
the gauge.
In terms of pulse crops like chickpea, pea and lentil, optimum temperature required for germination
is 9 degrees Celsius.
I took a video on my phone to
publish them on You Tube.
This type of observation will help
growers to determine optimum
Overall, farmers can make a few
visits to their fields to determine
soil temperature before making
any decision on seeding.

videos that I had taken during my
first scouting visit North of

For Soybean farmers, make sure
soil temperature is above 9 degrees Celsius.
AGDD at Val Marie weather station at different base temperature
Accumulated Growing degree days does
varies at different base temperature.
At 0 degrees Celsius base temperature,
AGDD falls between March 1 to March
31st is 18.45 to 147.25. At this base
temperature Winter annuals and
Lambs Quarters will easily germinate
from the soil. If base temperature is 5
degrees Celsius , AGDD falls between 0
to 91.3. At base temperature 7 degrees
Celsius, AGDD fall between 0 to 72.1. At
base temperature 9 degree Celsius,
AGDD fall between 0 to 48.45. Overall,
this type of observation will help farm-
ers to check for weed emergence as
well as make sound decisions on pre
seed burn off with herbicide group tank
mixing to avoid resistance. Eg., G9 +G2
or G9+G14. Follow me on twitter to find out
