Regular Meeting
February 23, 2017
The Board of Education of the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township met in a Regular Meeting
on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Administrative Services Center. Present at the
meeting were: Mrs. Randolph, Mrs. Richardson, Mr. Huffine, Mr. Abrams, Mr. Metzler, members;
Dr. Flora J. Reichanadter, Superintendent of Schools. Mr. Downs and Mrs. Ford were absent.
Ms. Sarah Dorsey, Communications Officer, presented a district update to the Board.
 First time in 125 years, the Girls Basketball Team is advancing to the State Championship this
Saturday, 8:15pm at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse. Tomorrow will be “Pike Pride” day; everyone in
the district will celebrate the success of the team by wearing Pike red.
 The Robotic Teams will be advancing to the next challenge.
 Boys Swim Team at Pike High School did extremely well at sectionals; coming in second overall.
 Aiden Warner (Pike High School student) was named the Sectional Champion in the Diving
Competition. He will compete in the State Competition at the IUPUI Natatorium.
 Coach Thomas Moore was named the Boys Sectional Coach of the Year.
Mrs. Pat Burton, Director of Student & Community Services, asked Dr. Reichanadter, Superintendent of
Schools, to come to the podium. Dr. Reichanadter addressed the audience and stated, “I would like to
celebrate some individuals who went above & beyond their call of duty. On Friday, January 20th in the
Pike High School Gymnasium, a life-changing incident took place. What seemed to be an ordinary event
became an extraordinary experience; a gentleman collapsed; went into cardiac arrest. Without any
hesitation, our leadership team & “First Responders” worked tirelessly, putting their medical skills to use
and saved the gentleman’s life.” Dr. Reichanadter, recognized the following individuals for their heroic
leadership in a life-changing moment:

The Superintendent recommended Approval of the Performing Arts Center Lighting Remodel 2017 be
approved as presented and placed on file in the office of the Director of School Facilities & Security.

Mr. Huffine seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.

Board Member Items
Mr. Huffine recognized Nicholas Sadenwater, a Boy Scout from Troop #343. Nicholas attended the
meeting for Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge; his father, Patrick Sadenwater was in the
audience as well.
President Randolph reminded the Board of the upcoming Treasures event. The Board will provide an
auction item.
Vice President Richardson informed the Board that she attended a meeting at Pike High School hosted by
Karen Bush. She complimented Mrs. Karen Bush and Dr. Ruth Woods for all that they do for students.
The Pike Culinary students provided lunch for the meeting.
Dr. Reichanadter, stated, “Dr. Young, Ms. Mary Kay Hunt, Mrs. Cindy Huffman, and Mrs. Tracy
Swinton and I, hosted a STEM coalition meeting at Pike. During the meeting, we shared with the group
the district’s STEM accomplishments and goals. In recognition of the athletic accomplishments of the
Girls Basketball Team, we will have a Pep Rally scheduled at 6 am on Friday, February 24th. Ms. Sarah
Dorsey is actively working on the district’s media blitz campaign for tomorrow. In addition, Mr. Darrell
Morton has created a fabulous video of support for the team. In the video, the students and staff are
wearing red and white to show Pike Pride. Also, we have ordered a charter bus that will be taking the
students from Pike High School to Banker’s Life Fieldhouse; they will be escorted by Police provided by
IMPD. Finally, as Ms. Dorsey mentioned earlier, Aiden Warner will be competing in the State
Championship at the IUPUI Natatorium; we are proud of him and very excited. A lot of reasons to
celebrate in Pike.”

Mr. Metzler asked if there will be a rally after the game.
Mr. Abrams commended the Girls’ Basketball team and the Coaching staff for their hard work and
commitment to exercise sportsmanship conduct during the season.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
