The minutes of the February meeting were accepted as read. Application for transfer for Greg Cobble was noted. Second reading for candidate Skip Overdier was approved. GRAND KNIGHTS REPORT: GK Colletta stated that our budget figure for the year was $10,172 - we have spent $2,689 to date, leaving $917 to reapportion. He appealed to members for ideas to put these funds to the best use possible. GK John detailed the results of the Council Fish Fries to date: Feb. 15 Corpus Christi - 226 meals, Feb. 22 CC (heavy rain) - 157 meals, March 1 Resurrection - 182 meals and March 8 CC - 149 meals. We have one more fish fry @ St. Rita on March 22 and need lots of volunteers. The State Convention will be held in Orlando May 24 - 26. We are sending one delegate. Proceeds from the “Persons with Intellectual Disabilities Program” - (Tootsie Roll Drive) will be distributed to Okaloosa Special Olympics and the Bishop’s Morning Star program. Both Resurrection and St. Rita collections amounted to over $1300 each and $800 was collected at Corpus Christi. Chairman Jeff Freeman thanks all who help out with the collections. We have been invited to join or sponsor our own Our Lady of Guadalupe (One Life One Rose) prayer service. Currently there is one planned in Niceville on July 25. More information will follow. We are still looking for Chairmen for the following: Casino Night, Habitat for Humanity and Special Olympics. Please let us know if your parish is having a “work day” as far in advance as possible so that we can round up some volunteers. Remember - we need the help and participation of ALL Brothers, not just the same few who are there to answer the call “all the time.” CHAPLAIN’S REPORT: Father Kevin Johnson was unable to attend. FINANCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT: Brother Tom Fears reported that we have 70 paid members, with a new total of 130 (94 associate, 36 insurance). Tom said that he hopes that the new mandate requiring for all members to pay dues within two years or face suspension will eventually result in a big savings for the Council. We still have many members on the books who have not paid dues for whom the Council still pays their Supreme and State dues. Tom thanked all those who have helped at our fish fries. Committee reports: YOUTH - no report VOCATIONS - Brother Will Conley reported that he sent birthday cards with checks to four seminarians and received several thank you cards. Maybe we can extend this ministry to sending Christmas cards to all the seminarians. GOLF TOURNAMENT- Brothers Charlie Noonan and Chris Pierce report that plans are well under way with several planning meetings already held. The tournament will be held May 4 @ Emerald Bay Country Club with a 8:30 AM shotgun start. Charlie said help is needed lining up sponsors as well as competing teams. We definitely need every member to: *Play or volunteer *Enter a foursome (or two) *Sign up a hole sponsor (your doctor, dentist, lawyer, financial advisor, etc.) *Collect door prizes from your favorite restaurants and stores SEE LATER PAGES FOR MORE DETAILS Unfinished business: None NEW BUSINESS: In answer to the Grand Knight’s request for suggestions for charitable donations: Brother Chris Pierce proposed that we give $400 to Emerald Coast Sacred Heart Hospital Foundation. The Foundation funds basic needs (clothing, shoes, etc.) for poor patients receiving medical care. Brother Charlie Noonan proposed a donation of $300 to American Marine Institute which helps troubled youths. The State cut funding to 20% and AMI is required to raise funds to cover the remaining operating budget. Brother Will Conley requested that we support the prison ministry by purchasing two cases of 20 Bibles (approximately $10/11 per case) to be distributed to Catholic inmates in the two FLDOC prison facilities served by his ministry. A separate proposal by Brother Tom Fears was made for each, seconded and approved by vote. FIELD AGENT’S REPORT: Brother Tim Pugh discussed long term care insurance and the three options for covering the inevitable increased cost of medical care in the future. He again mentioned that an annuity as low as $300 is available to new members. Please see the insurance message from the Supreme Council on a later page. DISTRICT DEPUTY’S REPORT: District Deputy Joe Purka reported the degree dates noted below on this page. Our Council has recruited one new member against our quota of 10 while suspending 14 leaving the membership at minus 13. New members help a council maintain its vitality. With three parishes to work with, this council should have no trouble recruiting one new member each month. A council that doesn’t recruit gets stagnant and attendance at meetings dwindles. We already have one council in this district that has gone from highly successful to stagnant. That shouldn’t happen to this council. April is Squires Month - if there is any interest in forming a Squires circle at this Council, please contact Richard Walcheck at 217-1836. The Financial Secretary must submit names on Delegates Election Form by March 15. Knights of Columbus Day of the Unborn Child is March 25th. Knights and their families are asked to fast, pray and work to restore respect and protection for the unborn. Bishop Parkes will lead Knights and others in a Rosary at the tomb of the unborn at 5 PM March 25 at Holy Cross Cemetery on 12th Ave. in Pensacola - all Knights are invited to participate. GOOD OF THE ORDER: Please keep the following in yours prayers: Pope Francis, Bishop Gregory Parkes, Bishop John Ricard, Father Tom Collins, Brothers Chris Pierce and Joe Biscone and especially for the repose of the soul of Brother Bob Moerschel. It’s become popular this time of year to encourage the opening of an IRA or similar retirement annuity, or the depositing of additional funds into an existing account, as a tax-savings vehicle. A secondary approach is to tout the rate of interest that money in one of these accounts can earn. Let me join the chorus of folks encouraging you to open or add funds to an annuity, but for a different reason. Certainly, contributing money to a Knights of Columbus annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax return. And our annuities do pay a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of principal. Opening or adding to an annuity for these reasons, however, strikes me as taking a short-term view of a product that is designed to provide long-term security. How much security? How does retirement income that you cannot outlive — guaranteed — sound to you? Here at the Knights of Columbus, you can open a retirement annuity for as little as $300. Consistent and disciplined savings placed into that annuity over time can guarantee you an income at retirement that you cannot outlive. That guarantee — along with the fact that no one has ever lost money left in a Knights of Columbus annuity (remember – absolute safety of principal) — really will provide you with peace of mind. I am happy to meet with you – at your convenience and in your home – to explain in detail the benefits of opening a Knights of Columbus annuity, along with the benefits of our top-rated life insurance, disability income and long-term care insurance plans. Tim Pugh 678-0962 [email protected] PS I am committed to sponsoring a hole for the #11893 Golf Tournament, and for every insurance, long term care, or annuity application that I write on the council between now and the golf outing, I will commit to sponsoring an additional hole. (This commitment does not include the minimum $300 annuity) Idle Thoughts Of A Retiree's Wandering Mind: I planted some bird seed. A bird came up. Now I don't know what to feed it I had amnesia once---or twice I went to San Francisco. I found someone's heart. Now what? Protons have mass? I didn't even know they were Catholic. All I ask is a chance to prove that money can't make me happy If the world were a logical place, men would be the ones who ride horses sidesaddle. What is a "free" gift? Aren't all gifts free? They told me I was gullible and I believed them. Teach a child to be polite and courteous in the home and, when he grows up, he'll never be able to merge his car onto the freeway. Experience is the thing you have left when everything else is gone. One nice thing about egotists: they don't talk about other people. My weight is perfect for my height--which varies. I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. How can there be self-help "groups"? If swimming is so good for your figure, how do you explain whales? Show me a man with both feet firmly on the ground, and I'll show you a man who can't get his pants off. Is it me --or do buffalo wings taste like chicken?
