Mass Y5 Two standard units for measuring weight are grams and kilograms. 1000 grams = 1 kilogram 1000 g = 1 kg Look at packets and tins to find their weights. You need sand, plastic bags, rubber bands and a balance. Make your own weights. Find some packets that are unopened and have weights written on the side. Place your first object on the scale. Put a plastic bag on the other scale and fill it with sand until the scale balances. Write how many grams this weight is on a small piece of paper and place it in the bag. Seal the bag with a rubber band. Make a range of different weights. What is the smallest weight you made? What is the heaviest weight you made?
