Dowry- state of affairs in one’s life -Noble women of the Middle Ages were expected to bring a dowry to the marriage. Usurer- professional in financial institution -The usurer lent the neighbor 2000 dollars. Vexation- irritation -I burst into tears of vexation, filled with anger and humiliation. The necklace itself could be taken as a metaphor for the illusion that respect and status in society rely upon wealth. *The necklace that Madame Loisel borrowed was suppose to prove that she was a member of high end society but it turned out to be fake, just like her belief that she was a member of a higher society. Allegory The necklace was an item that was out of reach for her status. personification "tapestries peopling the walls" Symbolism The necklace itself symbolizes wealth and appearance. The revelation of the necklace's falseness at the end is meant to mirror the falseness of Mathilde's dream of wealth. Madame Loisel- Very ungrateful for the life she has, because instead of being delighted, as her husband hoped, she threw the invitation on the table. Also, materialistic, because she had no gowns, no jewels, nothing and she loved nothing but that. **POV 3rd person omniscient Madam ForstierWealthy, beautiful, and generous, because she let Madame Loisel choose any jewel from her large casket. Monsieur LoiselMadame Loisel’s husband; is very unhappy with his life, but does the best he can to please his wife by spending his money on her and willing to sacrifice things for her. He is also patient and resourceful. Mme. Loisel realizes she lost Mme. Forstier’s necklace. Madame and Monsieur Loisel are invited to a ball and since Madame doesn’t have anything to wear her husband buys her a dress and she borrows a necklace from her friend, Madame Madame and Monsieur Loisel start borrowing money and working to pay off the lost necklace. They spend ten years paying of the necklace and when they give the new necklace to Mme. Forstier's they find out that the original necklace was not real. Mme Loisel complains about her not having expensive things and is not happy. Setting: 19th century France. Mood: suspense & irony
