Matter Study Guide What is Matter? Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. 3 States of Matter SOLID LIQUID GAS Has a distinct shape. Is wet, flows and does not have a shape of its own shape. Takes the shape of its container. Is invisible and does not have its own shape. Spreads out to fill its container. Matter Study Guide Physical Change: Changing the size, shape or state of matter. Evaporation Condensation Heat causes a liquid to evaporate into a gas. Cooling causes a gas to condense into a liquid. Liquid Æ Gas Gas Æ Liquid Melting Freezing Heat causes a solid to melt into a liquid. Cooling causes a liquid to freeze into a solid. Solid Æ Liquid Liquid Æ Solid Matter Study Guide Liquid water has many uses: Properties of Matter x x x x x Volume: the amount of space an object takes up. Mass: the amount of matter in an object. Texture: how an object feels. Flavor: how something tastes. Drink Wash ourselves (bath, shower) Brush teeth Wash dishes and clothes Cook Water can appear in all 3 States Shape/Size: the way an object looks. (flat, round, large, small) Color: the appearance of an object. (blue, red, shiny, dull) Science SOL 2.3 The student will investigate and understand basic properties of solids, liquids, and gases. Key concepts include: a) Mass and volume, b) Processes involved with changes in matter from one state to another (condensation, evaporation, melting, and freezing) Unit Begins _____________________________ Unit Assessment _________________________
