Getting to school
The Nashville MTA bus system is a
great way to get to and from school.
Most routes can even accommodate
afterschool activities, so getting a
ride home after practice is no longer
a problem. And, MTA makes riding
the bus safe and comfortable. Our
friendly drivers are happy to help by
answering whatever questions you
may have.
Youth Fares
Youth fares (for riders age 19 and
younger) are $1.00. If you are
paying, please tell the driver you
need the youth fare and pay with the
exact change when you get on the
bus or use an All-Day, 7-Day or
31‑Day Quest Youth Pass. If you plan
to transfer to another bus, you will
need to pay another youth fare of
$1.00 or swipe your multi-ride pass.

In partnership with the Mayor’s
Office, Metro Council, and Metro
Nashville Public Schools (MNPS), the
Nashville MTA offers a unique
program that helps students get to
and from school and other activities
via an MTA bus.
All MNPS students enrolled in grades
9 through 12 are able to ride MTA
buses at no cost. Students in grades 5
through 8 who attend an out-of-zone
school where they have no yellow
bus service are eligible to participate
in the StrIDe program with parental
permission. This transit partnership
works in tandem with regular MNPS
bus transportation.
Each eligible student’s MNPS ID card
serves as their school ID card, library
card and bus pass. It is programmed
to work on the fare boxes on all the
MTA buses. Students should place
their ID above the bulls-eye located
on the fare box and wait for the
box to beep. This sound indicates
that the card has
been recognized, and
the student will be
allowed to board.
A new school ID card
will be issued at the
start of each school
year and is non-transferrable. It is
valid for bus rides on MTA buses in
Davidson County only. Students will
be issued student ID cards at their
respective schools. There is a charge
to replace the card that will be
collected by the school.
Students utilizing this service should
follow the MTA Code of Conduct.

school — that way, you’ll never be late!

Your Bus and

Exiting the
Bus
It is important that you remain
alert while riding the bus. It is your
responsibility to get off the bus at
your stop. If you are not sure where
to get off, ask the driver as you get
on the bus.
If you know the stop you want, signal
the driver about one block before the
stop by pulling the stop cord. The
stop cord is located along the right
and left sidewalls of the bus.
When exiting the bus, please use the
exit doors toward the middle of the
bus. Please remain at the top step
until the bus comes to a complete
stop, and it is safe to exit.
Transferring
from one bus
to another
If you plan to transfer to another bus,
you will need to pay another youth
fare when you board that bus. If you
are using a multi-ride pass, just
swipe your pass at the fare box.
Transfers to and from regional routes
(outside Davidson County) are different
and may require an additional fee.

store your bike and ride in comfort.

Schools to provide the support
services necessary to accommodate
students. We are in constant
communication with schools to
handle any special needs including
early dismissal and service
disruptions.

of any nature will be reported to
MTA Customer Care. Parents may

BAD WEATHER
When it snows in Nashville, some
streets and hills may be too
hazardous for our buses to travel.
For your safety, we have developed
snow routes — detours set up on
some of the routes to avoid icy streets.
To find out if snow route detours
are in effect, check our website or
tune in to local news stations.
On school early dismissal days only,
many routes have a midday trip
that connects to Music City Central
for student transfers. Check your
schedule for midday trips near your
school.
When a tornado warning has been
issued for Nashville, the dispatcher
will notify drivers to proceed to
the nearest shelter area. In some
cases, the driver may pull over
and evacuate the bus at a building
along the route and direct students
to a safe place during the storm.

PARK & RIDE
All items found on the bus are
turned over to Lost and Found and
may be picked up at Music City
Central at 400 Charlotte Avenue.

around Nashville’s corridors. Park
your car in a lot convenient to you
and take the bus to school. See the
MTA system map or website for a
list. Also, the train stations in
Lebanon, Martha, Mt. Juliet,
Hermitage and Donelson have
convenient parking for bus and
train customers.
