1) Define the word, write a sentence including the word in context, and provide a synonym
and an antonym. Follow the example below:
Definition: Austere - stern and cold in appearance or manner
Sentence: Mr. Smith’s teaching methods seem austere, but only on the surface. Instead of
having harsh and strict penalties, he allows students to make up late homework.
Synonym: serious, severe, harsh
Antonym: gentle, plain, simple
2) Don’t forget to highlight the definition of the word in the context of the sentence, as
shown above.

A sentence as the following will not help you reflect on the meaning and usage of the word.

Avoid these type of sentences and take the time to provide clues in the sentence to define the
meaning of the word in context. Underline the meaning of the word as it is shown in the
example.
