St. Eugene School
Specialty Program News
June 9, 2016
From Mrs. Webster
Third graders have spent the last several weeks
writing multimedia stories about a hero with a
special power. We followed the pattern:
introduction of character, problem, climax and
resolution. Their creativity was amazing.
Printed stories were sent home this week.
Fourth graders have been focusing on their
angle geometry skills. Using Geometer’s
Sketchpad students explored angles and their
measures. This project along with other fourth
quarter work were sent home this week.
Fifth graders used a spreadsheet program to
represent the results of the ecosystem vote.
They organized their data, used a formula and
created graphs. Students created their projects
before the final votes were finished and then
got to witness how the graphs and totals were
automatically updated with the new data. Their
projects also came home this week.
Enjoy your summer. Hope students will find
time to practice their keyboarding and use
Front Row for their math skills.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Another successful year of activity and it is time
for the summer fun to begin. Thank you to all
of the students and families for the
tremendous support during the school year.
Have a great summer and we will see you in
the fall.

From Mrs. Ricker
The art show was a great success!! Thank you
to all who came on Sunday to see the fabulous
art the students chose to put in the show. By
now you have all the projects that were
completed this school year. I hope you enjoy
seeing what your children have created. What
talented artists we have at St Eugene School! It
is such a joy teaching art to all of your
wonderful children and I hope they will
continue to be creative and use their
imagination this summer.
From Ms. Falk
Music joke: C # (See sharp) when you cross
the street, or you’re going to B b (be flat)!
A big Thank You to everyone who helped make
the Spring Concert so wonderful. I especially
thank the fifth grade parents for making sure
their students memorized their lines and
created costumes for Pirates! the Musical. The
beard ideas you came up with were amazing.
We are finishing our blues unit, and I sure have
enjoyed the witty, frustrated, political, sad, and
problematic songs that have been created.
Grades 4K-5 have had fun trying different band
instruments. A big shout out to Brass Bell
Music, who lent us a trombone, french horn,
trumpet, oboe and percussion kit for a week so
we could hold and try the real deal. They rock!
This week we check out the cello, and next
week - well, maybe an accordion, we’ll see.
Here is the link to The Piano Guys video (which
is cellist Steven Sharp) I am showing in class:

Grades 6,7 and 8 have done a great job at
creating songs with different themes using
Garage Band on their iPads. We finished
Keyboard Emphasis songs, then Strings, some
classes did “scary” songs, and we are finishing
up with “futuristic” songs. The experimentation
of different timbres while searching for the
perfect sounds really broadens the composers’
knowledge of instruments families and tone color.
We continue to practice songs for Mass, to sing
and learn about patriotic songs, to play
recorders, and the various classroom
instruments. We finish up with grades 1-8
playing a rousing game of Music Bingo, which
is a fun way to learn music symbols.
Most of Wisconsin’s many fine colleges and
universities have summer music and fine arts
camps for students of all ages. Check them
out! There are also many free live concerts
offered in every city and village - grab a picnic
and enjoy. Live music is so important to one’s
music education that I give extra credit if you
attend a performance. If you’ve never been to
a Madison Concert on the Square, I highly
recommend it - here is the link.

God bless your summer!
From Mrs. Platten
Learning Support 2016-2017
Thank you for a great year everyone! I will be
spending the very start of the school year on
maternity leave, but look forward to coming
back in the fall to see how the students have
grown and resume work with the 4K-5th
grade students and teachers. I also can’t wait
to talk to all of my former middle school
students to see how their year is going! Our
new Associate Director of Learning Support
will be here for our middle school students
from the start of the year.
What to do this summer?
We are all looking forward to a little break
this summer from the daily hard work of
school, but let’s make sure we all exercise our
brains! Did you know the teachers are all
reading a book over the summer together?
We are reading a book from Ms. Jones about
assessment, and when we come back in fall,
we’ll be discussing it and doing some book
club activities.
Many students are participating in a variety of
summer learning programs too. My biggest
recommendation for any student for the
summer is to keep your brain practicing by
reading books either from the library or your
RAZ Kids Account (5K-3rd graders), and to go
on Front Row Math and practice some math
skills (1st-8th graders). All of these accounts
are available through the summer just as they
were during the school year! Use your same
usernames and logins.
